Sheared straight through the tang about half a centimetre into the handle. Luckily, the blade stuck in the swede I was chopping. It was only a cheap knife, and a bit light for the job, but still... brassica 1: steel 1.

We do have a cleaver, somewhere. We also had more suitable knives, but they weren't where they belonged and I was being lazy. Personally, I think a hatchet would have been the right tool for that particular swede.
