We use Virgin mobile, and we're pretty happy with it. We only use the cell phone for emergencies really, and things like ordering pizza while we're on the way home, so we probably use it for about 60 minutes/month is my guess. And they have a prepaid minutes plan, where you only pay for the minutes you need really. So it works out to about $10/month for us. There is a minimum monthly payment (every 3 months they'll take about $30 out of our account)so even if we don't use all those minutes - which we rarely do - you still have to pay the $10/month. But that's pretty inexpensive. They probably have various rate/minutes options - you'd have to check their website to see what they are specifically. But we've been happy with them for the past year and a half. I'd recommend them if you don't use the phone that often, like as your main phone number or anything.

Hey, I just noticed that the January issue of Consumer Reports has a big section on this very topic. The Best phone and plan for you. I'm sure you won't have trouble getting your hands on a copy, what with your library powers and all.
