I spent a lot of time wondering if progressive small towns could possibly exist. Are there low-stress, quiet towns out there in which people don't go to church but make art instead? Is there a place where locally-owned business outnumbers the chains? Could I possibly live in an affordable home with a backyard and dangly mobiles hanging from the trees and have neighbors with "Impeach Bush" signs in their front yard?lawrence-fucken-kansas... awww yeah ( ... )

Lawrence sounds amazing...once you get over the stigma of saying you live in KANSAS. ;)

And don't get me wrong, I do love Seattle and all the many fabulous things it has to offer, I'm just wondering if I'd thrive more in a smaller locale.

Yesterday, driving home from an overnight trips with friends on I-5 from Portland to Seattle, staring out the window at the ugly expanse, I spent a lot of time wondering if progressive small towns could possibly exist. Are there low-stress, quiet towns out there in which people don't go to church but make art instead? Is there a place where locally-owned business outnumbers the chains? Could I possibly live in an affordable home with a backyard and dangly mobiles hanging from the trees and have neighbors with "Impeach Bush" signs in their front yard? They do...sort of. The city I grew up in, only just barely a city, is liberal, progressive, and rent's about $450/month (on average, and that's cheap in this part of the country, for a place as civilized as this). A lot of people here want to vote for Kucinich. They don't like the Patriot Act. There are stores that sell On Our Backs and Bitch, and people read them in the aisles ( ... )

Is it too risky to divulge the name of the plce (the city you grew up in)? I'm curious, would like to learn more.

I'd prefer not to say, but I can tell you that it's very like two other little cities/towns that were in my mind when I wrote the above comment. Specifically, I'm thinking of Ithaca, NY, and Amherst, MA ( ... )
