I think there is something to be appreciated from all types of music, even the ones I don't like :)
I think Britney's first album was pretty good!

Also... woot summer! Late nights and iced tea and no rain to drench me while I'm out! It's my all time favourite season ever.

Catchiness is only one aspect of it. Anyone can produce a catchy song with a few basic chords and enough studio time. But it's impossible to properly enjoy a song when it's doused in such cynical commercial intent. I don't believe you can judge a song in a vacuum - you need the context in which it was created.

What needs to be appreciated is that 'popular' music includes a vast array of other genres, it's like a catchy watered-down union of subsets from everything else, a LCD.

And Ruth isn't really that much of a musical snob, she likes every catchy pop song she hears, she just likes to think she doesn't :p
