On one hand, I see the point your old boss was trying to make about supporting yourself... if I had the chance to go back and talk to myself about earning an English degree, I would have said the same thing, "DON'T!" For all practical purposes, school is an economic investment -- you pay the money, do the time, and at the end, will hopefully wind up with a set of job skills that will get you into a better field where you can eat Progresso instead of Ramen. Had I actually had that perspective years ago, I would have rethought things. When people asked me, "So what CAN you do with an English degree?", I got angry and defensive instead of actually answering the question... and now I'm in a field that sometimes makes me want to throw myself off the top of a twelve foot stock ladder. Even still, I'm so unprepared for a job running a retail business -- I have no business classes, no accounting classes -- just on the job training that the company paid for me to have.
