It's eye opening for sure, didn't realise it was on a scale that big. The Abbey too!

The main problem with the article was all the assumptions the scientists were willing to make. The strangest one equating gunpowder to TNT. Gunpowder is not a terribly reliable explosive, especially the gunpowder they had at the beginning of the 17th century.

Wooo! Are any of the buildings still there that the gunpowder plotters used? Do you work in one such, perchance?

And reading the BBC article, I'm very much less than sure whether using the parameters for TNT is going to give a reasonable model of a large gunpowder blast. Black powder generates a lot of gas pressure, but is a slow explosion. I'd tend to see a lot of that going straight up as a column of fire, rather than outward as a shock wave.
