In which I dip my toe into the world of social justice.

I was out for a wander on the Internet this morning, when I saw somebody in an anti-racist discussion link to the Daily Mail. I assume ignorance on the part of the poster (I believe that they're American), and so I prepared a little lesson.

I know that I'm coming late to this party, so sorry for that.

The Daily Mail is a racist newspaper that Read more... )

Hey There, I just wanted to say that I read your response to me in Neo's journal, as as I'm not sure he's going to unscreen it, I just wanted to pop in to say that I totally agree that The Daily Fail is awful.

The only reason I linked to it, was that it was a guest writer, but also I thought her story was extremely important to mention. I've been posting links for a month now about why the movie The Help is a racist pos, so fwiw, that was my reasoning.

I believe some people have even gone so far as to provide a caching service, so that when you want to link to one of the site's articles it doesn't increase their advertising revenue! (But I can't remember what it is.)

(As to the post - that's a pretty comprehensive education, packed into a lot of blue text :) )

Bah and humbug (and this is the icon I meant to use the first time). I'll do it myself, then.

Though it sounds... ludicrous to try to stop the entire Internet linking to them one link at a time, I would very much like a similar fate to befall Internet Explorer. Perhaps the fights can be won :)

Very, very occasionally, the Mail is less than terrible. (I am always impressed by their response to the trial in the case of Stephen Lawrence [wiki link], for example.) With the amount of outrage they have flying around, they occasionally direct it in a useful direction.

That said, you also missed out mention of the Mail's support for the Blackshirts and the Nazi party in the 1930's. In fact, a reading of the ``famous stories" section of the wiki page is helpful reading, which gets across the central themes of probably the UK's second bigest paper quite well.

All entirely fair; they're a properly nasty rag and even just looking at the front page makes me feel angry on most days.
