Kaiba quits coming home from work.
Spends days at the office and Mokuba wonders if he's bothering to eat or sleep or shower or change his clothes and Yuugi wonders if maybe he's actually two doors away fucking Mokuba with his hand clasped over his brother's mouth to keep him silent.
They don't find out until days later from Kaiba's secretary (when Mokuba finally gives up waiting) that Kaiba-shacho's currently out of the country on a business trip and won't be back until early August.
Mokuba hangs up.
Looks at Yuugi with defeated eyes and says, "This is my fault."
And it is (basically), so Yuugi doesn't bother contradicting him. Instead wanders out onto the balcony for a smoke.
Mokuba follows after a moment, "I thought you quit." His tone is accusing and he snatches the cigarette from Yuugi's fingers. But instead of putting it out like Yuugi's expecting, he brings it to his own lips.
There's a moment of still silence while he holds the smoke in his lungs and mouth.
And then he coughs. Splutters.
Yuugi smiles for the first time in too long and takes the cigarette back. "Your brother wouldn't want you to smoke."
"My brother," Bitter (and far too true) words that wipe the smile from Yuugi's face, "Is currently halfway across the planet. Trying not to think about me."
"Right." Yuugi nods. Understands. Hasn't a clue what to do about it.
He smashes the cigarette under the toe of his shoe and looks over at Mokuba who looks out at the setting sun.
"I miss him already."
