July comes and June goes and it's been a month.
They celebrate Mokuba's birthday without Kaiba.
And time was, Yuugi would've remembered instinctively that Mokuba's birthday was on the seventh and would have had something special ready to give him a month or two in advance. But he's losing his touch of late and so Mokuba comes downstairs in the morning and tells him matter-of-factly that he's fourteen now (doesn't really look it yet, but he's acted much older for years) and pours himself a bowl of cereal.
Yuugi spends a couple of hours after that trying to bake a cake because it's really the least he can do.
Far less than Mokuba deserves.
It takes him two tries, but he finally ends up with something vaguely resembling a cake (a little more lopsided and a little less fluffy) which he frosts, tops with fourteen candles, and presents to Mokuba.
And Mokuba smiles at him and tells him that he didn't have to (and means it) and licks the frosting off his fingers when he's done.
Later, Yuugi catches him looking at the phone (again) and takes far too long to realize that it's because he's waiting for his brother to call.
The phone rings only once that whole day.
And Mokuba picks it up hesitantly (terrified to hope) and doesn't let his face fall when it turns out not to be Nii-sama.
After midnight, and they're curled up together (not like lovers, Yuugi tells himself) watching a long movie and after it's over, Mokuba shifts so that he's straddling Yuugi's thighs and fists his hands in Yuugi's shirt and Yuugi pretends he's not thinking about what he's thinking about for the three and a half seconds it takes for Mokuba to lean in and bring their lips together.
The kiss goes on for a long time, both reluctant to give up this contact.
Mokuba finally pulls away, licking his lips with the little pink corner of his tongue, and says, "Thank you." For the cake and the kiss and for sticking around when Kaiba didn't (couldn't). "For everything."
