August.
It’s been two months and a scattering of days since Kaiba left and so much has changed and yet nothing is truly different.
They wait for him by the door.
Mokuba had wanted to meet him at the airport, but had (reluctantly) let Yuugi talk him into patience.
Seated side by side in the entrance hall with their backs against the wall and their bodies not quite touching, just barely close enough that their skin comes into fizzing contact when either of them moves. Not speaking.
The silence is unbearable and heavy and lingering.
They’d begun their vigil before even breakfast despite knowing that Kaiba wasn’t expected until after lunch because neither of them could bear to not.
Yuugi leans his head back against the wall and closes his eyes and tries not to wonder what it’s going to be like now. With Kaiba back.
Mokuba’s smaller fingers curl around his own, but Yuugi doesn’t open his eyes.
The door opens with a sigh.
And then there's a breath, a pause, and then all silence shatters.
Mokuba throws himself up and forward with a shout (grinning widely) and grabs his brother around the middle before his Nii-sama can even make it through the doorway.
Kaiba reciprocates. Even smiles a little as he does it. (And Yuugi can’t help but notice how his body looks unslept in and how much thinner he is than he was when he left.)
“We’ve missed you, Nii-sama.” Mokuba says into his brother’s stomach. “We’ve missed you so much.”
And Kaiba’s expression changes. “We?” He looks away from Mokuba for the first time since his arrival and catches sight of Yuugi still sitting on the floor with his knees to his chest.
He looks… surprised, mostly. Like he had been certain that Yuugi would have given up and gone home long before now.
He doesn’t know that Yuugi’s home is dead. He doesn’t know that this is as close as Yuugi's going to get to a home anymore.
In fact, he doesn’t know a lot of things.
Yuugi looks at Mokuba (still with his arms around his brother because it’s been two months and he’s just not ready to let go yet).
Unfolds himself and stands.
“Welcome back, Kaiba. Welcome home.”
