Sooo, more than two months later, I finally come back to these... Terribly sorry about the delay.
They protect each other.
Seto saves Mokuba from (most) of the realities and harshness of life. And Mokuba saves Nii-sama from himself. From working himself into exhaustion too many nights in a row. From becoming too hardened by ruthless business deals. (From turning into the monster Seto knows he already is.)
Without each other, they come apart.
Without Nii-sama, Mokuba is left in a series of orphanages and foster homes and grows up to become his brother. Works hard and cunningly and eventually takes over a company. Has nameless servants to take care of a too-big house that’s not really home, takes no pleasure in life and throws everything into his work. Makes no lasting friendships (never meets Yuugi and the others without Nii-sama to bring him into contact with them), knows it’s himself against the world, and he kills and destroys lives without remorse (or punishment). He dies alone and ungrieved.
Without Mokuba, Seto still challenges Kaiba Gozaburo to that chess game. But he does it because he hates it at the orphanage, not because of his brother. And then he loses himself in his company for the few short years between Gozaburo’s suicide and that fateful duel with Yuugi when he loses himself in his own mind.
He never does manage to put himself back together again without Mokuba there to draw him back into life and sanity (even his desire for revenge isn’t quite enough motivation). And without Mokuba there to hold onto KaibaCorp for him, he’s quickly replaced at the company and then eventually shoved into an institution where he’s quietly forgotten.
They might not be exactly experts at protecting each other. Seto can’t stop Mokuba from losing that childish innocence and Mokuba will never entirely pull his brother away from KaibaCorp.
But they protect each other enough.
And they need each other.
