Of course, any weapon-carrying member of the UK Forces is supposed to defend themselves. This goes for all 2nd tier personnel.

The CV might say 2006, but to be honest, I do not believe the series writers, I think they got it quite wrong. Neither do I buy it that John is early 30s, Martin Freeman just can't get away with that, and John doesn't look/feel it. Just because it's in the series doesn't mean I believe it. But that's just me. :-)
