The surprise car crash scene is not a plot device. I don't know why so many directors and screen writers are using it so often. It's in movies such as The Forgotten and The Dog and TV shows like Alias. Most recently, I noticed it in No Country For Old Men. That's not really a cliche, seeing as it was really only done in one movie. Potentially a few more, as spoofs of the original.
