[Okay, so Splendid's figured out by now that he doesn't have any powers. He's also learned that all hope is not lost- people can regain those things. And since he's a moron, he's already assumed that it's only a matter of time before his abilities come back. Furthermore, today seems like the perfect day to test that theory! Feel free to catch him ( Read more... )

[Garnet is out for a walk around the residential area of town, when she spots something on the rooftops out of the corner of her eye. She turns to look just in time to --]

[WHY DO THEY KEEP MEETING LIKE THIS

[Garnet has practically zero reaction time once she's spotted him, and only has time to open her mouth and shriek as she gets slammed into the hard concrete of the sidewalk.

His landing is punctuated by sickening cracks and yet another scream, now hair-raisingly tinged with agony.]

M-m-my arm!!!! [Garnet breaks out in a cold sweat and begins trembling violently when she looks up to find the white of her radius bone is jutting out where her wrist should be curving gently instead.]

[if it's any consolation, he still managed to smash his head on the sidewalk AND THERE'S A REALLY NICE DENT IN HIS SKULL NOW and blood leaking out his nose and ears

this is a terrible day for everyone!]

[The young, very unlucky queen realizes that she must have also splintered some ribs, as every breath she takes causes her unbelievable pain. There's a good amount of blood beginning to pool around them, and she can't tell how much is hers and how much belongs to Splendid; she hasn't seen his injuries yet.

Garnet drags herself out from under the would-be superhero with her good arm and rolls onto her side to face him, groaning the whole way.]

Just w-what in the world w-were you t-trying to do?!

[he doesn't answer- he can't even make out her words, it's all white noise and a searing loudness -feeling like his head full of angry bees just stabbing away at the soft flesh of his brain.

His mouth moves just a little and more blood spills out, running down his cheeks to add to the pool around his head, turning his unusual blue hair a disturbing shade. HE'S...STILL BREATHING, but yeah that's a nasty crack in his forehead right there.]

[Her expression turns sour - she's trying the impossible, to access her white magic, a skill that is as much a part of her as breathing that has been taken away from her.

A Curaga would have patched them right up, she knows this too well, and the fact that she just can't wrenches a frustrated howl from her as the hurt in her body ratchets up in intensity to remind her that her wrist is snapped in half, she has road rash on her arms and face, and shards of rib are poking into her lungs. And Splendid, who is sprawled out beside her, seems to be faring much worse.

She reaches out to him with her unbroken arm, dropping her trembling hand on his shoulder after running her fingers over the side of his face and pressing them against his Adam's apple, where there's still a pulse. Well, he's not dead...yet.]

Splendid...we h-have to get help...

[His face contorts; the contact hurts, and a wounded noise sounds softly in his throat, like he's some animal that's been shot- and in a way, that's just what he is; a stupid animal who injures himself and others with his own ignorance and arrogance.

There is quite possibly now a window of bone where you can peer into the throbbing grey matter of his brain, if you cared to peel back the skin on his forehead.A red bubble wells up between his lips and pops, but at least his eyes are slowly cracking open.]

[For a moment she just lays there, letting the pain emanating from each and every injury batter her like a rough ocean wave. Arguably, she's been through worse. Zaghnols have gored her, Bombs have burned her, and Cactuars have riddled every inch of her with thousands of punctures. But each time, a potion or healing spell was never far away. Without a method to soothe the pain, this is agony.

Her hand retreats, and slowly, torturously, she lifts herself up, realizing that she's been crying this whole time. She sits beside Splendid, whimpering each time she moves in a way that stirs her broken ribs, and begins dabbing at his forehead with her sleeve. His wound is severe, worse than anything she's got, and she knows she'll have to do more to stop the bleeding.

It takes much effort - literal blood, sweat, and tears - to remove her sweater, but once she has, she gingerly tugs Splendid's head into her lap and begins to dress his wound, folding the cream-colored garment and wrapping it around his head.] Just hold on...

[It's funny, in a way, and yet also terrible, because this is the absolute last thing that Splendid deserves- to have someone he hurt cause themselves even more pain in trying to care for him. Good intentions alone are too bare, too insubstantial to erase the agony his foolish hands create in such abundance.

Splendid is not a very good hero at all, really, as some very small and very buried part of him might realize one day.

His fingers finally move, but slowly, scuttling sluggishly over the concrete for something- anything to hold. Blood still seeps from his mouth; he makes a listless gurgling noise.]

[The fact that he is the one who injured them both is far from Garnet's mind - the only thing that seems to register in her brain now is that everything hurts and he's bleeding out on her lap, which she's absolutely powerless to stop. This is what angers her, not the fact that Splendid hurt her, but the fact that she can't heal them. Her hatred is directed at Mayfield ( ... )

[Splendid's eyes are finally fully open, but they're cloudy and unseeing and one rolls into the crook of its socket to stare blindly off into the distance. His breaths are becoming slow, shuddering ordeals; distantly, he finds himself not minding. He's died before, he knows the feeling, and he can tell that this is a different sort of death than his last- when the Kryptonut Shifty and Lifty stole resulted in him exploding. No, now there's a creeping chill in his gut and throat and his thoughts are strange, fractured flickers flaring briefly into life before fading back into the black of his mind.

Dimly, he realizes that one of his hands is warm and that hand manages to curl a little, squeeze just slightly, wanting more of it. Maybe he's even trying to say it's all right, don't worry, I'll come back- I'm a superhero.]

[After laying her broken arm in her lap so that it encircles Splendid's head, Garnet remains rather still, because it's more comfortable this way for both of them. Still, she wishes she could stroke his hair, to perform a simple gesture that might comfort him in his final moments.

She's feeling a little dizzy from blood loss and brute shock, but she hangs onto consciousness despite how her body urges her to faint and allow sleep to dull all the hurt. Isn't that what princesses were supposed to do when they were in trouble? Instead, she curves her quivering lips and smiles down at him, assuring him that she won't leave his side until it's over.

The battered monarch gasps when Splendid squeezes her hand, and the pain that flares through her fractured ribs makes her grip him back more tightly. She lifts his hand and presses it to her collar bone, nestling it between her chest and her chin. She begins to hum her song, the same song she had been singing when they first met. It won't be long now.]

[He could cry, if he still felt pain, simply because death is equated to failure. But Splendid is just not the type to do that- tomorrow he'll either forget this dreamy, ominous experience, or shift the blame, or perhaps never quite understand what just happened.

But that's for then, and now her melody reaches him on some soft and distant and fading shore. He sucks in a harsh breath- it whistles hauntingly over his teeth -and does his best to hum the superhero fanfare in return. But he can't, there's no strength left for that, and perhaps it's for the best that Garnet's song is left alone.

The hand that's held moves once more in Garnet's grasp, and then falls limp. Splendid is gone.]

Annnnnnnd cue breakdown. thelittlecanary August 4 2010, 15:58:08 UTC
[There's an instant of raw disbelief that blankets anything else she's thinking and feeling when his hand is suddenly so very cold and lifeless in hers. Garnet even forgets to breathe, and continues to hug his hand to her body even though her warmth won't and never will catch on

because

Splendid

is

dead.

A wail escapes her lips, expanding her lungs with a shuddering breath and etching her cry with pain. She falls forward like a child prepared to throw a tantrum, and makes contact against Splendid's stilled chest before she begins howling, overwhelmed by the utter betrayal of having to face death with no way to stop it, of being trapped in this horrible town that has taken everything from her with no explanation. On and on she sobs, sprawled out on top of Splendid's body, impelled by all the physical and psychological torture that has been inflicted on her thus far.]
