I'm a gir...'scuse, me, I'm a woman, and I totally can't understand the drama behind being called ma'am. It's not like people are saying "Here you go, you wrinkly old crone. Have a nice day, hag."
THIS. As a waitress I have to deal with people freaking out over me calling them sir or ma'am when most of the time I want to call them gluttonous cunts. If only they knew, maybe then they'd stop pissing and moaning.
"Little girl" would cause teeth-grinding in me. "Ma'am" is just...manners. At least it wasn't "honey" or "sweetie" or..."puddin' pants", those I could see getting upset about because of sexism, but "ma'am?"
Wow, God forbid anyone tries to be polite to a customer. Using "ma'am" may seem kind of old-fashioned or quaint to some people, but I don't think of the term as only referring to older women. For some reason the thought of someone not leaving a tip just because the barista innocently called them "ma'am" just pisses me off.
