Awakes
Duskwing awoke with a start. "Awoke" was perhaps not quite the correct word to use for a disembodied spirit once again becoming aware of the mortal world, but the effect was much the same. Like a sleeping mortal rudely jerked out of a pleasant dream--which, in a sense, he had been--Duskwing stepped out of his usual resting spot and looked around.
What had disturbed him? Nothing living moved in the dimly lit gallery that housed several of Slog's favorite or unsold artworks. Scratch one theory--no one had disturbed Duskwing's resting place, the grisly Seeker statue known as Stupidity in Blue--which also happened to be Duskwing's own corpse. A quick check on Slog scratched the other theory--Slog was happily puttering around with a sculpture-in-progress and didn't seem to be in trouble. From experience, Duskwing knew that Slog got quite annoyed if disturbed while at work, so he decided to ask questions later.
Having ruled out all two of the usual reasons for finding himself back in the mortal world, Duskwing was at a loss. What was going on?
