Can you believe it? I watched three movies in the last 24 hours. Three!! Okay, so one was so utterly horrible, I fell asleep and missed half... but I did see the beginning and the end, LOL!
I'll start from best to worst, lol. And, beware of Spoilers!!
Unleashed
I really really enjoyed this movie. I'd wanted to see it when it was in theaters but I didn't get a chance to. I remember the previews and how interesting it looked. Plus, Bob Hoskins and Morgan Freeman??
For anyone who hasn't seen the movies or even the previews, it's about this guy, Jet Li's charrie, who practically gets raised as a dog. He lives the life of a dog. Except a dog trained to fight. He's locked in a cage, barely fed, and fed like an animal. Has to wear this collar. Obedient when the collar is on. The collar comes off, he's a ruthless fighter, sometimes being forced to fight to the death. Bob Hoskins plays his "Uncle" aka Trainer/Evil Bastard. And he does it wonderfully. Both are really great in the movie.
Bob's charrie gets wind of this fighting championship kinda thing and of course makes Danny (Jet Li) fight in it. It's always to the death. And Bob's charrie only gets his money if Danny kills his opponent. Before that, he was using Danny to get his collections, from people who owe him money. Using Danny as a threat. "If you don't give me my money, I'm taking his collar off." He apparently pissed someone off so badly, they decided to get Bob's charrie back. Cause a car accident and shoot up the car. Danny manages to escape.
He finds refuge in this antique place that carries out of tune pianos. Enter Morgan Freeman. He plays a blindman, trained in piano playing and he gets paid to tune said pianos in the shop. During one Bob's charries little visits, they happened to stop at that very place, which intrigued Danny so much, that's where he went when he escaped. Met Sam (Morgan). So he went back there, and Sam took him in.
Sam and his step-daughter take care of him (he'd been injured in that accident) and start teaching him about life. The simplest things like ice cream, to picking ripe fruit. Danny still keeps the collar on. He eventually warms up to them, and even more to music, and the piano. He's not sure why as he can't remember his past, he just knows he loves the sound of a piano. Sam and his daughter both play. She's in recitals and everything. So they start teaching him. She even gives him her old tiny piano that she clutches like a security blanket.
Of course things don't stay happy. Bob's charrie didn't die in the accident and comes looking for Danny. And things kinda go back and forth from there. Won't give the ending away.
The acting in this movie... I so loved it. I love Morgan in anything, and he's one of my all-time favorite actors. And I've always liked Bob. But I was really surprised by Jet Li's performance. Going from the obedient child-like character who clutches his very old teddy bear and reading an ABC book, to being that ruthless killer who was trained not to care about people's lives.
I am soooo getting this movie when it comes out on DVD. I loved it.
The Eye
So I finally got to see this movie. Even watching part 2 before the first cause I could never get my hands on it.
It has a very Sixth-Sense kinda feel to it.
A blind woman undergoes an operation to gain her eyesight back. But the donor of the corneas she received wasn't a normal person. She saw things no one else could. Yup. Dead people. This woman has never had her sight before, so everything is new to her. It takes her awhile to even realize she can see dead people. She doesn't understand what's happening and asks her doctor (who's basically her age) to help her. They track the donor down, and try to find out why she's seeing this things, and more importantly, why she's being haunted by the spirit of the donor.
Quite an interesting story. I know it's being remade in the US. Should be interesting to see. I did like this one better than the 2nd. The reason for seeing the dead people is very differnt in the second movie. I liked the concept of this one better.
The girl starts wishes she was blind again cause she can't take it. She feels isolated. She's being haunted by people who died horrible deaths. With no idea why.
I recommend this one. I liked it, heeeeee. Only one thing. Doesn't bother me any, but I know it bothers a lot of other people. The movie's in Cantonese with English subtitles. (No dub available.)
I just has one problem with the movie, but I won't say it cause it would spoil too much. Let's just say something that happens freaked me out too much for my liking.
The Thing Below
Okay, this movie downright sucked. It was so unbelievably awful. Not one good thing to say about this movie.
The acting was so pathetically horrible. It was painful to watch.
The CGI was even worse.
There's supposed to be this "specimen" onboard a cargo ship that somehow gets loose. It turns into this big ugly creature with tentacles, I think. Looked like an octopus with snakes for tentacles instead. But it was soooooooooooooooooooooo obviously fake. Some of the worst CGI work I've ever seen done in a movie. It was just pointless and stupid.
This is the movie I fell asleep to... 30 minutes after it started. It's pretty rare for me to fall asleep during a movie like that. Normally I shut it off if I get too sleepy or something. I just didn't care to this time. I wanted the movie over with as soon as possible.
No one watch this movie. It's so beyond awful! You will be pissed for wasting $4 on this movie and it's two hours of your life you'll never get back.
