[Captain's Log] Questions and Feedback [Stardate: 091409.5]

If you have any questions, need help, and/or advice on how to improve this community, please leave a comment. I may not always be great at explaining or wording things nor catch some of the ideas that aren't so great in hindsight. For a first time site maintainer, I can use all the help I can get. (This entry can act like a sort of 'Questions/FAQ' ( Read more... )

The only advice I can give you is that for the most part, sitting back and letting the people do what they want is a good thing. Extreme mods are bad for communities, I've left a few myself because the mods acted too much like my mother.

Tagging...is very important! It makes the navigation SO much easier. I highly recommend it. I am a little anal about the tagging, however with the size of the comms that I manage, it's understandable. :3

Don't forget to have fun! That's the most important.

thanks for dropping by and giving some great advice! you made alot of good points. especially that first one. inspired me to rethink this entry. revised the content and wording. also, that i need to just take it easy and let people do their own thing. i don't want to be overbearing for i wouldn't want that put upon me either.

i hope my tagging system and users are finding the main tag list through the profile section alright. well, if they have any questions, that's what this entry is for. and so true, navigation is important (and tagging clearly).

i will. just getting things started is stressful. but starting to calm down. now that i'm getting advice and putting things into perspective.

First of all - chill! 43 members and only 2 posts is nothing to worry about as it's a fic community.

Second of all - the reason not to worry, and the reason I haven't posted is that many of the people you'll have joining (like myself) don't necessarily write Star Trek fic but do read it. I tend to join comms, rather than just watch them, because then if I do suddenly have something to contribute I'm already signed up.

i got a better night's sleep, put things into perspective, and revised this entry when i got a chance.

when i posted guidelines, i kept in mind and tried to address members (and watchers/readers) who are writers and/or readers. but you're right, not everyone who joins is going to leave comments or post stories necessarily.

in the past, i had reserves about joining communities. i wanted to be able to contribute something, beyond a community promotion and other reasons. but now that i'm getting more into this fandom, i find myself signing up for the ones that i visit the most. thought it was about damn time. would love to meet and talk to authors i like and find more people to discuss star trek with.

by the way, thanks for the feedback!

Humans are creatures of habit. It takes awhile for new things to grab hold. Just keep promoting and you'll get there. :)

thanks for the vote of confidence! i really appreciate that. i hope this community does grab hold of the fandom in time. so far as promotion goes, i've joined the main stxi communities in my mind and posted ads. affiliated with kirk_mccoy + newtrekslash communities. got featured in trek_news (newsletter), which was awesome. going to make the rounds to request affiliation from other stxi fic communities when i get the chance.

I think this is a very good idea and when (not if) it becomes popular it will be great.

It has been well thought out, well planned and I think the only thing it will need is some time for people to find it.

Sorry, one thing to add, when you search for Star Trek XI, this comm doesn't appear, not sure how you would change that, but it might thelp you get more users.

i appreciate the compliments. there are quite a "few" people who are members and/or watching this community already. i just hope one day the writers will start posting their stories. i won't bug them about it. it's just that if you or any of them need help, ask! i'll be willing to aide anyone when college isn't bogging me down. as for more people finding this place, i think i'll try to request affilition from other stxi/star trek lj sites when i get the chance. and for that last thing you mentioned, i have no clue whatsoever how to do that. since day one, when i started this community, i've been pondering that. why isn't it showing up on the interests/search list. i thought as long as parts of the site said star trek i'd be golden. but that's so not the case... maybe i'll have to ask the the lj mods or whoever runs the communities or management for all of them or... well, not sure who to ask. have to check the faq section... and yes, it would help users find this place!

not long ago, i checked various sections of lj and the faq one. submitted to have a question/info added there about how to get your community to show up. then i checked the interest tag from the profile section of this community and found that mine does show up on the "star trek xi" one but not the general "star trek" one. huh... well, hopefully there'll be a way to get it on the main/general one as well... double the exposure i guess! lol :p
