JANUARY 30TH 1:56AM
By now, Jonghyun knows the procedure. The inky clouds, the abnormally pale sky, and the grayscale that falls over the entire world - he knows what it brings, but yet he can’t help the small pang of fright that always forms in the pit of his stomach.
He turns to lay eyes on it once more. “Why,” the strange form hisses, vertebrae in its neck cracking noisily.
“What? Why what?” Jonghyun’s voice falters as the bench he’s sitting on evaporates, ashes traveling in a loose upward spiral before fully disappearing in a black cloud. He manages to catch himself before falling.
Bangs sway in a breeze that sweeps the scenery around them into oblivion, leaving behind an endless sea of white. “Why… do you continue to ignore me?”
“Wha-ignore you? I don’t even-” Jonghyun pauses as crimson eyes intensify into an impossibly deeper shade of red, “I don’t even know you,” he quickly finishes.
Its glowing fingers curl into tightly wound fists. “You do,” the entity abrasively accuses, world slowing in motion as it lifts a foot and gives a strangely childlike stomp.
A crack in the whiteness slowly snakes its way to Jonghyun, forming more cracks, the white chips off and reveals pure darkness.
The world’s speed eventually reverts back to normal, but he finds himself rapidly and helplessly sinking into that same void again.
Cold sweat forces the sheets to stick to limbs as Jonghyun frantically sits straight up in bed. His breath comes in fleeting and shallow, brown eyes darting back and forth in the dark obscurity of the room.
He gets up, grabs a glass of water, and carefully lays himself back down on the bed.
But sleep never comes.
8:21AM
“You’re actually making breakfast?” he hears Jinki’s incredulous voice from the threshold of the kitchen.
Jonghyun casts a casual glance over his shoulder. “Yeah.”
“Oh,” Jinki moves to stand beside him, eyes watching the pancakes sizzle, “Is there something wrong?”
He gives him the most innocent and curious look he can muster.
“It looks like you’ve been having bags under your eyes lately.”
“Ah,” Jonghyun clears his throat, the hand controlling the spatula shakily turning a pancake over. “Na, I’m fine,” he smiles.
Jonghyun silently sighs, total relief washing over his body, when Jinki toothily grins in return.
12:17PM
He had been trying really hard to ignore the pokes that have been jabbing at his elbows and sides for the past ten minutes, but Jonghyun feels that after one more (just one more) he’s going to scream and maybe explode.
The most forceful of all the jabs hit him somewhere in the bicep. Jonghyun lifts his head from the desk, a deadly glare narrowing his eyes in the direction it came from.
Minho sits, blinking nonchalantly back him before pointing at the professor at the front of the classroom.
“Mr. Kim Jonghyun,” he says, clicks his pen two times, walking up to the first row of desks and stopping. “Would you mind explaining to us the most important principles of economics from both Mankiw’s and Slembeck’s takes?”
Jonghyun groans inwardly.
Fuck this class.
2:00PM
“Hey hyung,” Taemin bounds happily next to him, “are you working today?”
“Yeah,” Jonghyun simply says.
Taemin sucks his teeth. “Oh,” then looks down. “I was wondering if you could help me with this essay I have to write. Some of it is based off of economics, but I’m not any good at that,” he perks up some, “I heard you were good at economics though.”
“Right.”
“So, can you help me?”
He snorts. “I’m working, remember?”
“What about later? Like after work.”
“Um-”
“-Please?”
“No!” That comes out a little louder than he originally intended. “Damn it, I just - I can’t. Get someone else. I promise I’ll help you next time, okay?” Jonghyun walks off, not waiting for affirmation and leaving a stunned Taemin frozen on the sidewalk.
FEBRUARY 2ND 1:40AM
A split in the earth widely cracks, the two pieces of land quickly pulling away from each other. Jonghyun’s feet pound on grass and dirt in a desperate sprint, the canyon continuing its expansion until it effectively catches up with him.
He narrowly avoids it for a short time, but eventually the one inch needed to connect his foot with the safety of the land is too far and he finds himself falling into the pit.
Seconds turn into minutes, he’s expecting for his back to meet the bottom in a vicious splat at any time, yet it never arrives.
Unscrewing his eyes shut, Jonghyun can still see the light illuminating the top of the canyon. A manly figure suddenly steps out, blocking half of it. His breath hitches in his throat as wings extend from either side of it.
“Do you want to be saved?” The voice sounds, echoing off the walls of the canyon.
Jonghyun chokes on his own spit, blond hair whipping wildly in his eyes. They sting and water.
“Let me save you,” it goes on, “I want to save you. Do you know what I want to save you from?”
Tears roll off the sides of Jonghyun’s face (from fear or something else - he doesn’t even know.)
“From yourself. Trust me and I’ll save you from yourself.”
12:50PM
“Hey, um, Minho,” Jonghyun points at the packet of worksheets - due in the next few minutes - lying sideways on the taller one’s desk. “Can I see that?”
He simply stares at him for a good while, nods, and then slides the packet in Jonghyun’s direction.
Sloppily scribbling in the last answer, he passes the stapled papers back to Minho casually. With a last stroke of his pen he sets it down and grins over at Minho.
“I know,” says Minho before Jonghyun can officially give his thanks, “I saved you.”
FEBRUARY 3RD 5:52PM
There’s a large intake of air through flared nostrils as Jonghyun sets his determined gaze upon her. “I like you,” he declares, calmly (more so than he originally intended). “Would you care to date me?”
“Date you?” Jessica repeats, and bats her eyelashes once, twice.
“Yeah,” Jonghyun shrugs, bites the inside of his cheek.
In turn, she bites her bottom lip before standing on the tips of her toes and pecking him on the cheek. “Of course,” she smiles.
He quickly forgets the uncomfortable feeling of lip gloss sticking to his skin, “Really?” He had never felt this happy about winning over a girl in the past, but this - it feels like a victory!
Jonghyun hugs her, picking her up and spinning around a few times as she giggles. “First date,” he grins and sets her down. “Where do you wanna go?”
FEBRUARY 4TH 11:45PM
Jonghyun doesn’t want to say he’s become used to this but it happens just about every night, so he knows what to halfway expect.
But it still scares him shitless each and every time.
“You’re ignorant,” it blatantly tells him.
Jonghyun can’t help but chuckle - all of this… shit he’s been dreaming is just crazy. “What?”
“You act like you don’t know,” the entity takes a step towards him, and that’s when Jonghyun finally notices that each and every time they talk it’s always the same distance away from him. “But you know who I am.”
His jaw clenches, his teeth roughly gritting together. But the form morphs into Jessica’s and his expression lightens.
“What is-?”
“-Jonghyun,” she smiles sweetly, despite the ruby colored eyes. “Do you know who I am?”
The knee of the leg Jonghyun takes a step back with buckles some. Her (its?) eyes gradually transform from a deadly crimson red to a familiar dark brown, and the world changes from grayscale to color.
She (it?) vanishes, and appears a few inches in front of him. “Jonghyun,” comes a whisper. He can feel a hand cupping his cheek, her warm breath caressing his lips. A coil of fear buried somewhere in the depths of his chest threatens to unwind completely.
“I -”
There’s an inhuman hiss, her frame flickering as if it’s merely a hologram. Sharp nails curve and delve into his cheek, the skin breaking and drawing beads of scarlet blood. Untainted terror keeps him from moving, flinching.
It rapidly transforms back into its original form. Jonghyun’s wide eyes catch a full glimpse of its face - high cheekbones, plump lips, well-defined jaw line, catty eyes, slightly pointed nose. He winces, gritting his teeth as the nails push deeper. Fresh blood begins steadily seeping out, and equally bloody eyes bore holes into his eye sockets, through his brain, and out the back of his skull.
Those eyes hold depths of unimaginable red.
“If what you say of not knowing who I am is the truth,” all of its features twist into a frown. “Then you will find out soon enough,” it smirks.
“What - what are you-?”
“What am I talking about?” It cackles, the malignity coating the sounds sends a raw, unmarked wave of fear up Jonghyun’s spine. “This could be fun,” is the explanation, “to see how long it takes you to… remember.”
A spark of anger flares. “L-listen, I don’t know what the f-fuck you’re talking about,” Jonghyun shouts.
“Oh?” Its eyes narrow into tiny slits of molten lava, and Jonghyun feels the press of cool metal on the hollow of his throat. He cries out as the fingers work their way deeper into his flesh, the anguish radiating throughout his skull. “Deep down, that’s something you absolutely know.”
“No, no I don’t!”
Jonghyun hisses as the jagged metal presses just enough to make beads of scarlet liquid to well on the surface of his skin. A little more pressure is applied and he screws his eyes tightly shut as a single stream of blood trickles down from the relatively small wound, disappearing under his shirt.
“Stop-!”
“-Do you want to know who I am?”
Jonghyun tries to snatch his face away from the nails, but they only tighten their painful hold, his secondary wound widening some. His eyes open, immediately locking onto the red pair staring back at him.
“I am,” the entity finally speaks again, “the key that unlocks my freedom.”
There’s a long pause before it says anything else, Jonghyun finding it safe enough to take in a shaky breath of air.
“And the key that locks you into your realm of eternal suffering.”
Jonghyun screams himself awake.
a/n: do you know who the entity is? ;D
