I think I am mostly on the side of loving it, though I see why it makes you uneasy. I love that in a world where skinny, mostly whiter-than-white women are the norm, he's using a group of not-skinny, mostly not-white women being awesome at something. And I also like that the clothes are representing a non-Western aesthetic. I think that, in common with a lot of runway shows, the clothes aren't being worn the way they might be in real life, and that there are quite a lot of pieces that actually I do like (or would if they were in colour).
I've changed my mind. I really like the clothes, although I am still bothered by the leaning towards Women With Their Hair Covered + Militarism a bit. But in general I think they're cool. I like how they move with the dancers, even though they're very geometrical.
I just went and looked up the designer's stuff available in stores, and I REALLY like that. There are things I would happily wear in that mix.
Yes, I like that he's choosing other images of attractive women than standard beautiful. I just read a review where he called them "beautiful in their own way." I personally find that women built like many ones in the show are often the most striking women in a room, so there is that bias on my side.
