Heavy...cs_whitewolfSeptember 30 2004, 09:07:07 UTC
Jee wizz, man! That was some heavy like shit. And it makes you think, if we in the 'muggle' world today found out that the type of magic used in Harry Potter was real as opposed to imaginary, would there be mass hysteria and panic like there was in the past? I would sincerely hope not- wizards, though equal in many ways to muggles would have the advantage (the older ones at least) what with being able to use their magic to its full extent as well as using apparation to flee if in danger, I suppose, but then muggles would probably attack the innocent- especially those of us who practice Wicca and other forms of witchcraft... whether or not they had proof.
But anyway, t’was a scary and truly thought-provoking little ficlet... just one question, where on earth did you get this weird-ass-plot-bunny from?

I honestly don't know what would happen today if we found out that Harry Potter magic was real. It probably isn't very similar but you could possibly liken it to the reaction after paganism and wicca were 'rediscovered' by a new generation of potential witches. There was a resurgence of interest followed by the disapproval of those traditionalist people to whom a witch was something that died out in the sixteen-hundreds. I think of all people, it would be the innocents in danger, as I can't imagine muggles capturing a wizard effectively. Wiccans would be easy targets, I suppose. All you need is a fundamentalist world leader with a distaste for those of us on the periphery of 'social norm' and then you have a crisis on your hands

Ya I did like it, did I forget to mention that? Oops!
I agree that it would be the innocents who would be in more danger as opposed to any real witch/wizard, but it really is a worrisome thought, I mean, how on earth would they go about trying to prove if one was a witch or not? Hopefully none of the old methods if you know what I mean. And not being biased or anything like that, but I think we'd have to look out for the Americans mostly, I say that only because of all the hype many of them are creating over the Harry Potter novels and films. But each country would pick up on the mass hysteria and act about the same as the others. A truly scary thought!
hmm very interesting and not something I've even seen thought of or touched upon in fiction whether ficlet or not... It's really interesting and somehow I can believe it happening; I don't see it turning into a complete witch trials again just because muggles don't necessarily have the power to place witches and wizards into camps or mass murder or anything but the extreme fear, degradation, and persecution as a new and more "sinister" minority is very believable. Wow. Very cool.
Thank you for your thoughts, which were very interesting. I'm not sure quite how people would react, I suppose it would depend on the level of fear that was created and how the situation was handled. It probably wouldn't be the witch trials all over again but can you imagine the segregation of people they suspected of haveing magical powers even if they were perfectly normal.
Section A. Choose one question from this section. You should spend about 45 minutes on this section (+5 minutes reading time).Omg, I accidentally scrolled down so that I saw that first. It looks exactly like those document-based questions I had to take for a college class and it freaked me out for a bit, lol

Aha! I hoped the beginning of the fic would freak some people out! Bringing back the horror of exams to the fandom. Muwahaha!
I'm really glad you liked the ficlet. It was just something I had kicking around and then I really started thinking about what would really happen. Can you imagine what it would be like? The ethos of fear and the rise of extremism. It would almost be like a betrayal of 'muggles' for people living among them to suddenly reveal themselves as having this kind of power.
Darling, I got the reply to the wombat email! (What on earth was I on when I included that?)
OH OH OH I would LOVE to make a site! I need a permanent archive somewhere! Pics? Am excited!
Hi It was amazing, I've never read something like this. Really makes you think, about the possibility that wizards actually exists, and the chaos that probably occur if they are discovered. Like someone said before, the mere existence of the Harry Potter series cause chaos in some parts of the U.S. and I don't know where else. But in the real battle, who will win? "muggle" or wizard? I think the wizard the adventaje. I hope the plot bunny atacks you again, it's amazing what he can do. Aspid.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it, or that it made you think, it was just the effect I was going for. What was the reaction to Harry Potter in the US? I remember reading a newspaper article that condemned harry potter for attracting children to witchcraft and away from christianity. It pissed me off, really.
Wizards win! Wizards always win!
I hope the bunny attacks as well. I will lie in wait tonight being hopeful!
