I live in the hood. my roomates' cars have gotten broken into in the past. One time a car full of Puerto Rican's followed him for 5 blocks just becasue he had a garmin in his windoow. as soon as they went inside, they busted his window. they didn't get anything, but it still sucks.

Advice:
try leaving the glove compartment open to show that there's nothing in there. park on the street. hide change. and NEVER leave anything in your car. period.

i have even known folks with not so nice cars, with out glass insurance, to just leave the car door open, let the thief go in there and look without breaking the window. obviously you can't keep anything in your car with that method.

yeah, nat used to always leave his car unlocked on his parents' street... i guess their windows were getting smashed frequently enough by crackheads etc that it was the best solution at the time. it wasn't a nice car and he didn't have anything in it though.

I mean, I guess my biggest concern would be that leaving the car open means it would be easier to steal the entire car..

I mean, yes, they could steal the car when they break into it, but in the act of breaking into the car they would have to smash a window thus making noise and giving themselves less time to fulfill their act. If the car door was open they would be alarm free and glass shattering noise free and they could take as much time as they wanted in stealing the car.

Moreover, if they did successfully steal the car, they would have to drive it with a broken back window, at least for a time, and would call attention to themselves because of that. They would also eventually have to replace the window.

batch is right, NEVER leave anything in your car. i know luke uses his ipod and his garmin for work; it might be a good idea to have like a "car bag" so that he can just dump it in there and carry it into the house.

even when you're places downtown where there are tons of people, you should always keep your car empty.

That's a pretty good idea Carl. I guess maybe I should wise up and start emptying my car out. Its just that I spend so much time in there it is practically my house. It would be a pain in the ass to move everything out of my house every time I went somewhere else.
