Second class citizens

In a country where gay citizens have to fight for their basic equal rights, it is appalling that even in what we consider to be the most liberal state in the country, many gay couples still do not have some of their most basic rights even when the government is legally bound for couples to have access to those rights. This is an incredibly ( Read more... )

Oh my god, I read that yesterday. That's absolutely sickening. The sheer blatantness of the county officials' defiance of the law and of their civil rights is terrifying.

It makes me sick to my stomach to think that this could someday happen to my girlfriend and I.

Hopefully, when we are elderly, the law will be very different.

God, that's appalling. I just... ugh. And I can't help but think: what if those two men actually had just been roommates? I can't imagine the law mistreating two roommates to that extent, kicking the healthy one out and selling his possessions and committing him to a nursing home. The only explanation is that they did it out of hate.

This right here is why we need gay marriage to be legal.

It isn't just homophobia either, it's also ageism: assuming that the younger of the two were incapable of taking care of the other or making his own decisions because of his elderly age. There are so many things wrong with this situation that it makes me incredibly angry.

Am I the only one who thinks that Mr. Harold died, because he had been so upset with the whole matter and with admitting him to a nursing home against his will? :/
What these people did (the county)... it's like breaking all basic human rights. Their explanation about believing these two men were only room-mates lost any basis after what they did with the men's property.

(The worst part is this - I don't think that American law is much different from Polish, so... unless the both men were incapacitated, the county had no right to admit any of them to nursing homes without the men's agreement. I don't even mention selling the property (on what basis actually?). Seems to me that the county broke the law on quite a huge scale =_=)
