I don't really understand this tendency to place all the responsibility upon the victim. It seems to be that everyone has this mentality that the victim of sexual assault or harassment should be the one making all these precautions in order to somehow prevent things from happening or to allow their attacker to continue enjoying the quality of life

My theory on the subject is that people have become desensitized to rape to the point where they see it as inevitable. Rapists will rape and there's no way to convince them to stop. So instead, it becomes the victim's responsibility to stop the rape. It's like the weather: sometimes it rains, and there's nothing we can do to stop it from raining, so it's up to us to carry an umbrella, in order to not get wet.
Of course this is a fucking stupid line of thought because men are not objects - they have sentience and free will and self-control and can be held accountable for their actions. Plus, it's actually the other way around: it's the victims who are unable to prevent themselves from being raped. Even if you wear a muu-muu, never walk home alone, never drink alcohol, never talk to guys, or hell, never even leave your home, you still can't ensure that you'll suffer a rape attempt. As an alcoholic and drug addict who has remained clean and sober for nearly 22 years: It is perfectly reasonable to expect him to stop being a violent sex offender. Not just overnight, but immediately.
