Actually, I think they did it pretty well. Doing it as a stripped-down version was a smart move because it highlights the melody, even more so than Joy Division's original did.
Then again, I've never understood why "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is so revered. And no, I'm not saying that to be iconoclastic or a dick; the success of the song really does illude me. As far as Joy Division songs go, "Transmission," "Colonies," "Shadowplay," and "She's Lost Control" all left a more lasting impact on me. As far as dance-tinged songs go, New Order's "Blue Monday" and "Temptation" are better than it too.
That said, I don't hate "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It just kinda annoys me that every single compilation CD/ boxset always puts that song on it when any of the ones I listed above are a more accurate representation of what Joy Division sounded like.
