Heine Rammsteiner
Partner. He's not just the person Kanda's closest to in Death City, but one of the only people he's ever really felt close to in his life. As a fighter and a weapon, he trusts and respects Heine. As a friend--if you could call them that--it's far more complicated. His feelings towards the man run deeper than Kanda might prefer. He knows that there is something dark inside of Heine, even if he still knows little of his past: meeting Heine's Shadow was enough to show him that. But the two are devoted to each other, and it did not for an instant escape Kanda's notice that Heine never left his side after the battle with Adachi in which Kanda was very nearly killed. He has even accepted the man's de facto residence on his sofa and has said nothing of the times when he's woken in the night to find Heine standing at the foot of his bed silently watching him sleep. There are some things between them that are still fragile though, and the arrival of Heine's "brother" in the city is a storm they have yet to weather.

Allen Walker
Idiot Moyashi. At least the fool is a consistent irritation from home, and he always gives Kanda a good outlet for venting his spleen against. There is actually more between them in Death City though: it was Kanda who dragged the beansprout's Shadow across the city and cracked its skull against Allen's until they talked, and it was Kanda who confronted Allen after seeing him dance with the Noah girl, Rhode, at the ball. None of this is leading towards them becoming friends though, despite the fact that if they could get over their mutual dislike they might notice how much they're often agreeing. In the end, as irritating as Allen is, Kanda knows that he is a capable fighter and a valuable ally. Which is why he'll be damned if he cedes him to that Noah who's chosen him as his host.

Howard Link
Link has been a thorn in Kanda's side since his arrival. Whatever the swordsman might have thought of the Inspector while they were living under the Order's thumb, Death City has only served to amplify Kanda's sense of distance from the Vatican and the Church. That makes Link, to him, a very unwelcome presence, and the more questions Link asks of him, the more he attempts to draw information from Kanda, the more resentful Kanda becomes. Ironically though, it is largely because of Link's presence in the city that Kanda is being taken into Allen's confidence about the 14th, and Kanda knows about--and supports, in his way--Allen's choice to hide the knowledge from Link that the 14th has made more appearances in this world than in their own.

Rhode Kamelot
The Noah girl. Kanda saw Allen dancing with her at the Ball, a fact which aroused no small suspicion on his part, and he has every intention of keeping a close eye on both of them, in case she begins to tempt out the Noah inside of Allen. Kanda won't attempt to kill Rhode because he has no way of know whether the dead return to their own worlds: if keeping Rhode alive in Death City means removing her from the battlefield in their home world, then it's worth not killing her. But of course he won't let her know that strategy: he wants her to be scared of him--scared for her life, in fact--an objective which he helped to assure by very nearly killing her upon their arrivals in the city.

Miranda Lotto {dropped}
Doesn't this woman ever stop crying? She doesn't have the temperament to be an exorcist. Kanda's never thought much of Miranda, not in the sense that he's thought especially poorly of her, but just in the sense that he'd never bothered to think much about her at all. She wasn't his problem and that was all. In Death City though, there's been the misfortune of her speaking with his Shadow and hearing all of what it said about the Order and Kanda's past, and about the feelings he never wanted anyone to know. All manner of personal, private things have thus been divulged to her, largely against Kanda's will. It was also the activation of her Time Record that dragged him, Winry, and Yuuri into the future, and whether or not the act was intentional, Kanda's patience with her is likely to remain thin.

Lenalee Lee {dropped}
It became clear quickly that Lenalee was not herself during the time she was in Death City. She was distant with Kanda from the start, and became only more so in subsequent weeks. Her standoffishness with Heine and the apparent loss of the customary understanding Kanda was used to her showing did nothing to repair the breach.

Lavi {dropped}
It's been a long time since Lavi left Death City now, but when he was there he still created plenty of headaches for Kanda, especially when he claimed jokingly (but nonetheless very publicly) to be Kanda's "bedmate." He was also one of the earliest weapons that Kanda tried to wield, though the attempt ended in no small amount of pain for them both. It was one of Kanda's earliest lessons in taking the issue of soul resonance seriously.

Germany (Ludwig)
Heine's country. Whether adoptive or not, Heine clearly has a fondness for the man, which translates into acceptance and a certain degree of respect on Kanda's part. Respect, however, does not mean deference. Germany is organized, methodical, and practical when it comes to battle. He also accompanied Kanda on his initial search for a (mundane) sword when he arrived in Death City. Kanda knows that Germany does not particularly like him, but he was never attempting to make friends anyway, and he knows at least that Germany recognizes his skill as a fighter. In the lead-up to the battle with Adachi, Heine and Kanda told Germany of their plans to kill their foe outright rather than let Shibusen bind them, and though Germany did not approve of the plan, he did nothing to prevent it. The outcome notwithstanding, that remains a fact which Kanda will not soon forget.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/95966073/20999197)
China (Yao Wong)
When Kanda traveled ten years into the future, it was China who headed the splinter group camp in which he found himself. As much as Kanda disagrees with the choice behind splitting a faction of fighters away from Shibusen's fighting force, he can appreciate the considerable accomplishment of establishing and leading a settlement in the middle of a war zone, keeping it safe, well-ordered, and secure. For that reason, he has considerable respect for China. As with Germany, it's a respect that does not translate into deference: it is clear to Kanda that for all his competence and leadership skill, China does not have the necessary answers.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/100538627/20860529)
Prussia (Gilbert Weillschmidt)
Loud. Heine's second adoptive country, this one with far less sense than the first. Kanda can, to a certain extent, forgive that though because Prussia is capable and focused on the battlefield. Fighting side-by-side with him during the NORAD mission, Kanda got to see him back up his bravado and swaggering with action. He can also respect the determination and fortitude with which Prussia accepted and adapted to his automail arm. That does not mean he commonly acts any less short-tempered with him though.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/96170797/24407654)
Yuuri Shibuya
One of three other residents of the city who were dragged ten years into the future by Miranda's Time Record, Yuuri was the one with whom Kanda shared the closest physical proximity. Stuck with the irritatingly cheery boy for more than a month in the isolated commune of the Calming Wavelength Camp, Kanda learned that he would have to find ways to work with him were they ever to make it back to the time from which they came. The fact that Yuuri's weapon form is a sword only made Kanda more determined. Almost by sheer stubborn force of will, he managed to resonate with him, discovering when he did that there was another hidden side to Yuuri's personality. As irritatingly irrepressible as Yuuri can be, Kanda respects the Maou side of him that is most often dormant inside, and though he would never call Yuuri his friend, he has grown to accept him with somewhat more patience than he extends to most people who cross his path.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/91003869/21003144)
Winry Rockbell
Medic. Early on in his time in Death City she bandaged Kanda's hands after he'd burned them attempting to wield incompatible weapons, but because he was kept in Shibusen's clinic he had no dealings with her after his wounding during the Adachi battle. Her friendship with Miranda is a clear cause of friction, though, as Winry does not take kindly to Kanda's impatience with those who won't better help themselves. She was one of the group who Miranda's Time Record dragged into the future, and she returned as Miranda's partner, though it was virtually no time at all before Miranda disappeared.

Kurapika
Weapon partnered with Kuroro Lucifer. Also one of the weapons Kanda tried, unsuccessfully, to wield early on in his time in Death City. Kanda is perennially uncertain about Kurapika. He seems alternately sensible and soft, pragmatic and too sentimental, rational and utterly foolish. His choice of partners is also suspect, since anyone who works closely with Kuroro is someone who Kanda will think twice about trusting. In fact, the most substantial conversation that Kanda and Kurapika have had was about Kuroro, Kanda privately advising that if Kurapika found his partner was deceiving him, he should kill him and be done with it. The fact that Kurapika has apparently chosen the opposite course of action makes him someone who Kanda will continue to approach with caution, despite his knowledge that Kurapika appears to genuinely want to align himself on much the same side of matters that Kanda is on.

Kuroro Lucifer
Damn Mushi. There are few people in Death City who Kanda trusts the motives and agenda of less than Kuroro. The man likes to play games. In fact, as far as Kanda can tell, the games are the ends in and of themselves. Kuroro appears all-too-eager to play both sides against the center, as he proved on the very first day Kanda met him when he set up a confrontation between Rhode and the exorcists in the city. Kuroro may well be a font of information, what with the way he watches and spins webs, but Kanda isn't willing to play to his games enough to find out what he knows.

Giovanni Rammsteiner
Heine's "brother," for some value of the term. Kanda, it turned out, was fertile soil for the seeds of doubt that Giovanni started to sew as soon as he arrived in the city. Giovanni pressed buttons of worry and insecurity that Kanda didn't even know he had, but he'd be damned if he let on about just how much the man's words (and his presence) got to him. In many ways, Giovanni did succeed in driving a wedge between Kanda and Heine, at least temporarily--the wedge being all the complicated entanglements which the two shared without yet being able or willing to acknowledge. The events Kanda witnessed ten years in the future instilled a new resolve within him though, particularly with regards to Heine, just like the opportunity to kill Giovanni in the final battle before he was sent back to the past instilled a new sense of security and cockiness. If he could kill Giovanni once, Kanda believes that he could do it again, and now he feels he has no reason to hesitate if the situation arises.

Badou Nails {no in-game interaction}
Heine's best friend. Kanda thinks he's patently insane. He also has no idea how or why Heine tolerates him, but he suspects it has something to do with a sense of humor which he cannot understand and does not want to take part in. However during the time when he was in the future, after Badou's untimely death, it was the man's accumulated hoard of junk and old papers that led Kanda to knowledge of all the events that had taken place so that, consequently, he at least can appreciate Badou's importance as a resource of information, even if he is some kind of a lunatic.

Nill {dropped}
A friend and charge of Heine's. She has been in Death City twice and left twice, though the second time she had no recollection of the first. Kanda only met her in person the first time she was there, shortly after her abduction and attack at the hands of Adachi and before Heine and Kanda became partners. Kanda attempted to wield her, but she was too intimidated to give him a real opportunity, despite the fact that Heine, recognizing how Kanda's skill would have kept her safe, approved of the attempt. Kanda remains unsure of the exact relationship Heine has with Nill, and to a certain extent it is a source of concern and insecurity for him.

George Washington
If Kanda could have chosen how to make Tiedoll more sensible, he would have made him like this. In fact, in some ways he can't quite put his finger on, Washington reminds Kanda just a bit of his own general back home. This may explain why he's got more time for talking to the man than he has for most people. It may also be purely a matter of gut impressions: Kanda has never gotten the feeling that Washington was making fun of him or making light of his experiences. And he's smart and practical enough that Kanda can reserve judgment on what might otherwise seem too kind and caring a streak. The relationship has never been tested though, and Kanda has never had to learn whether his trust would extend to following this general on the battlefield.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/101746266/26683613)
Suzaku Kururugi
The person who gave Kanda "Billy," the carnivorous plant. Kanda has more opinions on the plant than he does on Suzaku directly. He likes the plant. He even cares about it. Though he knows, of course, that it's just a plant, its meat-eating proclivities would make it easy to anthropomorphize (if he were inclined to do such a thing, which he isn't). As far as the young man who gave it to him, he respected Kanda's boundaries and didn't pry into things that weren't his business. Kanda doesn't have any dislike for him. In fact, he wasn't even irritating.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/95195865/24059304)
John Watson
Yet another of the weapons who Kanda tried and failed to wield before he and Heine became partners. Despite the fact that Kanda effectively barged into Watson's apartment demanding for him to transform, he also taught the man to do so by using meditation techniques which were then taught to others as a means to achieve first transformation without needing to resort to the Communal's staircase.

Alex Louis Armstrong & Laura Kinney {dropped}
The partnership that nearly gutted Kanda in the battle with Adachi, before both of them were sent home.

Mifune
When time for the final battle came in the Ten Years Later timeline, it was Mifune who delivered the news to Kanda and Yuuri in the Calming Wavelength Camp, and it was Mifune with whom they trained in the lead-up to the battle. Kanda respects the man as a fellow swordsman, but that respect was affirmed in the factory when Mifune gave Kanda one of his swords to fight with on the battlefield. Though they both knew the man was about to meet his death, each followed the path he knew was laid before him, and subsequently Kanda returned Mifune's sword in the present day, along with news of just whose hands he met his demise at.

Doctor Franken Stein
Responsible for Kanda's treatment after the Adachi battle, during which he incurred a fractured skull and was impaled through the gut by a set of metal claws. Whatever experiments Stein conducted on Kanda during the days he spent unconscious, the swordsman will never know. Perhaps they were the cost for what was, in the end, exemplary medical treatment: Kanda recovered with barely a scar to show for it.

Spirit Albarn
All too often it's been Spirit to whom has fallen the task of listening to Kanda voice his displeasure with Shibusen and their way of doing things. The man may not be a total idiot, but the organization for which he works has shown incompetence time and time again, which makes Spirit a fool at best for following them. Upon his return from the future, Kanda's first task (along with Yuuri, Winry, and Miranda) was to save Spirit from the witch attack in which he would otherwise die. Spirit's reticence to do what was necessary, his blind denial of a threat that unfolded right before his eyes, went a long way in convincing Kanda that the reigning death scythe really is as much of a short-sighted idiot as the school that he serves.
![](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/98862996/24943253)
Shinigami / Death the Kid
The idiot child at the helm of Shibusen, a supposed Shinigami who didn't have sense enough to hold his tongue during his grief over his father's death. In Kanda's view, Death the Kid's wish, which activated the BREW, is exactly the kind of foolish sentimentality for which he has no patience, the kind of sentimentality which Kanda outright condemns. He thus has little use, and even less respect, for Death the Kid.
