A friend of mine just had her 3rd baby...and he was born with cleft lip & palate. She goes to the same office my ob is in, but sees a different ob and they didn't see it in any of her sonos. I was kinda shocked by that, since the tech spotted Kaylin's so quickly, but for all I know, her ob may do her own sonos. So, needless to say, she's in shock ( Read more... )

Aren't those fairly easy to fix these days?

Yeah, fairly easy to fix and a fairly fast healing time, but it's still multiple surgeries through their whole lives.

Poor little ones. What causes that...do they know?

Yes and no. They know of a couple things that cause it....certain drugs, genetics, lack of folic acid...but then there can be environmental factors and random cases (which may be genetic and so far down the line that the parents don't know).

When we had to meet with the genetic counselor, she told us she had a couple that went back 14 generations before they found someone in the family with it. I don't think I could trace my family that far back if I tried!

Oh my, what a shock! I'm surprised it didn't show up on ultrasound, though. Maybe the baby's positioning had something to do with that?

I'm sure she'll be thankful for whatever support & advice you can offer.

Actually, I asked her today if her ob was the one that did her ultrasounds or if the tech did them, and she said her ob did them all. The tech did all of mine and spotted it instantly and my ob told me that was the reason she has the tech do her sonos. They are trained for that. I guess I fully understand that now.

I took her all my info and Kaylin's surgeon's info. I also told her to feel free to call me if she has questions about anything or just needs to let it all out. She told me she knows everything will be ok because she's seen Kaylin and would have never known she had a cleft if we hadn't told her (we didn't know them when Kaylin was born). So, at least there is that comfort there for her. I imagine that would have made me feel a lot better!

A friend of mine's daughter was born with cleft lip & palate too. I didn't know that the odds were 1 in 700!

Well, it depends on what research you are reading but most say between 700-1000.
