Niou and the Lion [bday ficlet for pos_praiser_01]

Yet another (not-so-)surprise birthday ficlet, this time for pos_praiser_01!

Title: Niou and the Lion
Pairing requested: Niou x Kirihara
Rating: G. I actually wrote something that can be rated G. 0____o
Summary: Niou gets Kirihara an early little birthday present.

(Kiri-elf's bday, btw, is like a week(?) away, so this is kind of an early present for him too, I guess. ^_~)

It was a Thursday afternoon, which meant that it was Niou’s turn to see the team pet - also known as Kirihara Akaya - home safely. A necessity, the team had found out long ago, because an unattended Kirihara could be a very dangerous thing. Plus, he had this habit of falling asleep on the bus home, thus missing his stop.

Niou really wouldn’t mind the task so much, if Kirihara didn’t have the attention span of a five-year-old child. Once he got him on the bus, it was pretty smooth sailing, but the problem was that walk to the bus stop. Given the way Kirihara stopped and stared and gawked at the shop windows along their path, one would think he didn’t walk this way every damn day. It was particularly annoying when he would suddenly run into a shop. The team had unanimously agreed long ago to never again take the route that brought them past the arcade.

Kirihara seemed particularly energetic today, much to an exhausted Niou’s chagrin. He was buzzing around like a house fly, refusing to so much as walk in a straight path. Although the hyper genki-ness of his teammate was really rather endearing, Niou simply wasn’t in the mood today, and sighed wearily as Kirihara made a beeline for his favorite clothing store. Really, no wonder the boy always needed a babysitter. Niou was starting to think he might need a leash as well.

Except . . . he didn’t go into the store, Niou noticed. In fact, he didn’t even look in the store windows, which was a first as far as Niou knew. Instead, Kirihara ran past the shop with frightening speed toward the second most-likely-thing-Kirihara-would-get-distracted-by : the toy crane situated outside the family restaurant.

Niou groaned. Once he got started on that thing, Niou wouldn’t be able to peel him away until he’d won something. He jogged up tiredly to where Kirihara was gazing into the cubed-plexiglass machine, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration.

“Hmm . . .” Kirihara always took too long to decide which plushie to go for; especially considering he never got the one he wanted anyway.

“I want that one, Niou-sempai. The lion,” Kirihara pointed to a cute little lion plushie.

Niou blinked at him. “So, then get it already, before we miss the bus,” Niou said, checking his watch. Actually, they still had some time, but it was always best to hurry Kirihara along as quickly as possible.

Kirihara turned to him and frowned. “You get it for me. It’s my birthday.”

Niou stared at him for a moment before sighing. He hadn’t forgotten it was the brat’s birthday this weekend. Yukimura-buchou already had a small surprise party planned after Saturday’s practice. Knowing that arguing with Kirihara was futile when he wanted something, Niou gave in easily enough.

“Alright, but if I can’t get the lion, you have to settle for whatever I can get.”

Kirihara gave a slight pout. “I want the lion the most, though.”

Niou rolled his eyes, fished some coins out of his jeans, and popped them into the machine’s slot, figuring out the best angle beforehand.

Well, it must have been his (and Kirihara’s) lucky day, because it only took him two tries to win. And he managed to get the lion.

Kirihara cheered as Niou pulled the plushie out of the prize slot and handed it to him. “Happy birthday, brat,” he said, then ruffled his hair. “Now, let’s get the bus stop, yes? No more distractions.”

Kirihara was too elated to argue.

While they were riding the bus home, Niou eyed the plushie lying in Kirihara’s lap. A couple of other passengers were eyeing it as well, probably thinking it a bit odd for a teenage boy to be carrying a stuffed animal. Any strange looks, however, were quickly countered with one of Kirihara’s eerie, challenging glares.

Niou stared at it and cocked his head. “Why did you want the lion anyway? You usually always go for the bears,” Niou inquired. The lion didn’t seem so special really: just another cheaply stuffed ball of fur. Although, it was a white lion, which was rather odd.

“Because it looks like you!” Kirihara grinned with only a small trace of evilness. He held it up and fingered its wide, white mane. “See? I already decided to name him ‘trickster’!”

Niou swallowed, and was silent for a few moments. “Um . . . Kirihara?”

“Yeah?”

“Just . . . if you tell anyone else about this, I’ll break your legs. Okay?”

“Okay!” Kirihara hugged “trickster” tightly to his chest.
