I've been taking swing dancing lessons all semseter, but I've been avoiding the actual events until I "get good." But lessons aren't where you get good, the actual dance floor is where the real learning happens

I like your writing style. You're interesting, too, so that certainly helps reading what you have to say.
This isn't exactly the most independent thing to do, but if you know someone who will take the initiative for you, maaaybe try to have him/her come along sometime. Confidence has a way of leaking over, and this person may nudge you in the right direction until you can handle the whole thing on your own. (Or just try to take along someone who will help you feel more comfortable with yourself, maybe.)

Why thank you. I like writing, but only when the proper inspiration hits me, which is about twice a year.
The first time I went to one of the events I ran into someone I knew from elsewhere, and she and I clumsily and laughingly danced for two songs before we separated and I had an episode almost exactly like the one above. It was fun until I pulled that shit. I think it would be easier if I made friends with more people at lessons. Now, how to do that...
I know of the steps. I do pretty well at the lessons, and when I went in for a one-on-one lesson my instructor told me that for leading I'm "good for a beginner." I do sometimes halfway try things and that leads to some awkwardness, or forget everything and just do the basic for 4-5 repetitions. I think I just need to get over the idea that people I don't know expect something great from me...
Now, I'm going to write an email begging my TA to give me an extra day on the aforementioned paper for partial credit.
