Aquarium disaster update

The final death toll from my aquarium disaster is 12 fish out of a total of 27 - almost half of my fish died. But it turns out that the cause may not have been what I thought it was. I posted to the Planted tank forum yesterday evening asking for advice, and the consensus seemed to be that it's pretty much impossible to overdose CO2 with a DIY ( Read more... )

Yikes, that's a lot of fish loss. Poor little guys. I guess it could have been worse.

So what would stop a yeast bloom once it got started? Does it just run out of sugar?

I think something like that. There's not much sugar in aquarium water, after all. I expect that the multitudinous large water changes I've done since all this happened may have helped, too. I've just finished another one - I think the yeast is all gone since the water's quite clear again and the fish aren't showing signs of anoxia, but the metabolic after-effects of the yeast's little party (ammonia and nitrites) are a bit too voluminous for my regular filtration to handle in a reasonable timeframe, so I'm dealing with those by simply partially replacing the water in repeated iterations.
