i've read a lot of commentary about how it's hard to construe any other sort of message from it other than the racist one, and i agree, it's pretty hard not to think that when you look at it.
the thing is, she's smiling. i also think the thing they were going for is men = sports, women = fashion...it's sort of a reach, but it's the shape issue, and they're putting the male athletes up with the female models as those are the epitome of beauty for the genders.
the thing is, there are male models and female athletes. and they didn't need to the cover like that at all. the comparison to the racially-charged king kong portrayals is obvious, and i don't really understand why they chose this as the picture.
