A chilled midnight breeze trickled through his window, cracked open just a tad to air out the burning scent of cigarettes and dying spirits. Tsuna found himself to be the only one left awake as the insomnia ate away at him. Gokudera and Yamamoto had argued themselves to sleep an hour or so ago, but even their normal bickering seemed off. The feeling of remorse hung heavy on their young (still only teenagers with a lifetime’s worth of regrets already) heads and hearts.

So he stared out the window for something on the horizon to guide him, but midnight has no light other than the pale, faint glow of the moon, and to them she could offer nothing but her cool sympathy. Nothing but sympathy for the children lost and unable to bear the weight of the lives thrust upon them.

------------------------

Gokudera’s nails rip death’s ebony wings from your back and let the feathers scatter and float away in the sea of moans flowing from his pale lips. You haven’t felt this alive in months, years, eternities, you’re not really sure anymore. You find your mind is clouding over and the desperation in every movement he makes is stifling. He arches up to meet you again, and those foreign words mingle with your shared moans, and you’re pretty sure that you’ve heard every one of the words fall from his lips before. Insults and curses, but maybe for tonight you can fool yourself into thinking, wishing that maybe their meanings really are as pretty as he makes the words sound.

------------------------

“I love you” you’d said to him, with more sincerity and maturity than you’d ever expressed to him. He’d looked back at you, but his eyes were never really on you, not completely. The stare had been distant and worried, but he agreed to go get just one cake after school, and that yeah, he did have time to walk you home afterwords. And that giddy feeling had made your heart soar when you had realized that he was just the hero you’d been looking for, and that your perfect fairy tale had finally come true.

It’s ten years later when you recognize that the look that he had given you ages ago is now a permanent scar etched into his eyes, and you cry the first time you realize that there’s no hope in it ever fading away. And it kills you inside, you know it kills him too. So you let him go the day that he wakes up early, the sun barely peeking through the door. You stand in the middle of the hallway, still barefoot and in your pajamas because you didn’t have time to change after you padded your way behind him. You’re not really sure where he’s going, but he’s your hero, and the heroes always do the right thing for their people.

And it kills you the way he whispers goodbye to the door, back turned because he just can’t face you.

Yamamoto finally finds Gokudera slumped against the swing set like a lifeline. He looks awkward, and his moody aura seems to taint the innocence of the playground. A nostalgic feeling grips Yamamoto as he watches Gokudera stand alone in the park where he himself had played in their younger years. He liked that it was such a close distance from his house, well, what once was his house before he had been forced to sell it to that man in the black suit who'd forced a smile and promised falsely that he’d keep the store running. It’d feel as if his old man had never left, he had assured. Still, that future was years to come, and to his delight the store still bore its proud title of “Take Sushi,” not the cheep chain restaurant name it had in his time.

A trail of smoke floats up from between Gokudera’s silver bangs; his head is dipped towards the ground as if reading the story of the old days that are still engraving themselves into the earth. Gokudera still seems oblivious to his presence, and Yamamoto chuckles to himself at his small victory. “Just in case,” Reborn had murmured to him when the Italian had left the funeral alone. He needed no more explanation than those three words, and so Yamamoto kept watching Gokudera, because he had already lost half of his heart when they’d lost Tsuna, and he wanted to keep that last half alive no matter what.

“The sky isn’t the same color as it used to be,” Dino whispers to the clouds. Hibari hums back, but whether or not it’s in affirmation or just to let him know that he’s heard him, Dino does not know. He continues anyway “Back then, the clouds floated differently. They were more aloof, more subtle than they are now. Don’t you think, Kyouya?”

Out of the corner of his eye, Dino watches the skylark hoist himself up onto one elbow. Etched like a painting into the background is an onslaught of dark, puffy storm clouds, each dyed a dark plum hue by the setting sun. Hibari lounges in the fading glow like a king against the endless skyline. His hair has grown longer than it used to be, and it hangs down in his eyes and dances with the thick summer breeze that comes before a storm. Dino fails to realize that he’s staring until a single raindrop splashes against his cheek and he blinks to find Hibari staring detachedly back at him.

He still hasn’t answered his previous question, so Dino decides to fill the silence that has accumulated between them. “Mm... so quiet. Were you always this quiet during training? Ah, it seems old age is getting to me.” He pauses to chuckle at his own joke, but dives right back in to thoughtless speech. “You know, it looks like it’s about to rain. We should probably head inside before the clouds reach us. My suit doesn’t do too well in the rain, but if it can handle all the blood you beat out of me, it’s bound to be able to--”

“Dino.”

“Hm?” The blond blinks, unaware as always of his incessant chatter.

“Shut up and watch the clouds.”

After a pause, Dino begins to laugh, and lets his eyes drift back to the quickly approaching clouds. “Right, right. Always so touchy.”
