Good luck. I hope you will find the kind of work that excites you.
Also the fact the school accepted your candidature and has nurtured you to become strong enough to be committed to your intellectual capabilities demonstrates that you do have the pre-req to make something good happen. :)
Kind of a circular argument..you think? :), But i used to use (during my grad school) similar justification a lot.
What about you? How did YOU get to where you are? I'm wondering if men generally have a clearer idea of their dream careers? Do you ever wonder, 'what next'?
P.S.: I made the post after a beer last night, read it all just now, it's not bad at all. :-) Maybe I should drink more :D
Shucks, I'm really sorry to hear about this.. But, that said it (conflicts with advisors) unfortunately happens a lot.. Glad other faculty are supportive - that should definitely help.. Is there someone else in particular who you think would be a good match for you - scientifically that is :-) ?
Grad-school can be a very isolating experience, hang in there! Worst case scenario, is there someone in the dept. who can write a letter for you to other grad schools?
I can now see how earning a doctorate is not about the project you do or how you've obsessed over one topic for 4 or five years. it is about how critical you are in analyzing things. I think a true doctorate is a testament to that abilityAs someone who's ten days away from the defence (and still writing the thesis - but that's another story) - I think it's more about the former than the latter really :-) At the end of the day, it's about whatever your committee decides is acceptable - which most times is tied to how your project goes

I found a younger faculty (actually I'll be her first grad student) whose lab and projects I like. My program director seems to want to help me too but she has to take care of some administrative mess I might be in because of the transfer to Master's. I've talked to quite a few people and basically have done everything I need to do, everybody is on vacation at the moment, so nothing is moving. I have to wait until next week for an update on my status quo

This was heartening to read. That doesn't sound very nice, but what I meant was that it's nice to hear that not everyone has this detailed 10-year plan about what they want to do and which direction they want to go in from the age of 16. I'm glad you've managed to stop believing a bad teacher/mentor, and realised that you're made of awesome! :P

The heart dictates the brain,...always happens to the most maverick and eccentric of all of us,...the decisions taken at such an early age are usually intuition, usually a getaway ......
There will always be people to jeopardize what you do,....jut because you have not toed the existent 'treaded' path..........the fact that it has dawned upon that "you don't know enough" is the mightiest realization of all the true essence of what knowledge is all about and the application of all sciences comprehensible,...your Ph.d is complete,.....it just needs a more physical form, that is all there is to it,.....it shall all crystallize soon,.....Time itself will lead you to the best solution and real soon..........
