16th Avenue apartment damaged by fire

ROCKFORD -- Firefighters battled an apartment fire that broke out in a two-story building in the 1700 block of 16th Avenue Monday night.

Rockford Fire District Chief Charles Martini said it wasn't clear what caused the fire, which broke out in the back portion of the upstairs apartment around 8:45 p.m.

The fire produced a lot of heavy smoke, and some flames could be seen as firefighters ripped out walls and ceilings to get at the blaze, which was between the exterior and interior walls.

Martini said a downstairs resident of the building was home when the fire started, but he made it out safely.
