Heh, disregard the last response about what you are going for. I got involved here at UAB in a new program called the Laboratory for Global Health Observation. Basically we use satellite imagery to monitor environments for malaria outbreaks, air pollution, deforestation or even refugee camps. Its a rapidly expanding field and with ever-increasing image resolution the field is becoming more powerful. I know Harvard has a similar lab going. Its something to look into.
If you love getting sexually harassed, mugged, and assaulted on the way to school everyday then John Hopkins is the place for you! Located in the scenic downtown slums of Baltimore, John Hopkins is well versed in giving students a lesson in why you need to value your life/sanity.
On a serious note though, everyone I know who's gone there has left hating Baltimore. If you go, don't live in student housing and carry a gun to class.
Interesting. Yeah, I'm not super concerned about where I live.. but so far everyone recoils when I say that I'm considering a move to either Baltimore or Atlanta.
I know Baltimore is dangerous and all that, but it didn't seem terrible when I visited (granted, I didn't explore too much).
Wow, that's a great list of schools. Congratulations!
My only bit of advice: at each department, ask (the junior faculty and senior grad students) if any of the more eminent senior faculty are likely to retire soon, or have been courted by other departments. It's very bad to go somewhere and then find out that the faculty who attracted you are departing.
Oh somehow I didn't realize you worked for Harvard!
And, yeah, let's keep in touch about meeting up.. right now I'm not sure when exactly I'll be there and how much free time I'll have.. but I'd love to get together if it's possible!
Quick question about the Boston/Cambridge housing market...
I am thinking about coming up there to look at apartments in one of the next two weekends or so.. do you think that's too early for apartments that are going to be opening up for June or July? Should I wait a bit longer?
I have absolutely no sense of how things work up there (..you know, if I need to jump on good deals now and all that).

Oh yes, definitely good advice. I don't feel like I've done enough homework on the faculty at any of the schools.. I need to get on that.
