So as some of you who know me may know, I'm not the biggest Anime fan, I mean I had a brief stint with it in the 90s, it was ugly, getting my hands on anything I could and watching mass amounts of garbage, until I realized that most of it sucked. There are exceptions to the rule though, I still love Akira, Grave of the fireflies still has me ( Read more... )

i dunno, man. visually it's amazing. and equally amazing was the fact that it took me 3/4 of the movie to figure out anna paquin voiced the boy. but the storyline? i was totally losing interest around the middle area; kinda had to force myself to finish it. i thought it was cool overall but something was lacking.

I watched it in Japanese w/ subtitles but I read she did the voice of Ray. weird. I dunno, I liked it, My main problem w/ anime is that its always so flashy and no story, I liked Steamboy because it was quite story driven, the characters were rounded out very well. the only part I found cheesy was when the grand-father is like "GO STEAMBOY!" ok.. you don't need to call him steamboy, I think the audience can figure out for themselves who steamboy is.

i tried to watch it in japanese with the subtitles but when i switched between the two i found the subtitles to be overly simplified. complex lines of dialogue were reduced to mere words. also, it was kind of weird looking at british folk talk japanese.

go steamboy.

I just find that watching anime dubbed, even with big name actors, it just doesn't work... I dunno.

Hmm... that's funny, though it's true that there is a LOT of crap anime out there, the fact is that Japan uses animation to a much larger extent than North America does ( North America is *just* starting to figure out that animation is not "just for kids" ), As a result, I think that they tend to put out as much garbage as a standard movie studio might put out in live action films. It's the idea of wading through the bad stuff to get to the good stuff... Mizayaki's work, for example is a real good example of some good ( and sometimes trippy ) stuff that's come out of Japan recently.

Well thats what I'm saying, there is some good anime out there... and maybe in japan 2/3rds of what comes out is awesome, but what is released here, for the most part is action schlock fests and giant robot wars, I mean it was cool when I first saw Neon Genesis, but after watching five different series with giant robots duking it out, it got a little repetitive. like I said, there is good anime, but you need to wade through the shit waters to find the golden nuggets.

Well now giant robots is a whole other story. Japan seems to have a love affair with giat robots, all the way back to Goldorak and Tranzor Z. :)
