Well, it's been almost two weeks since the big day, and I've been waiting for Danny to post something to no avail, so I guess I'll go ahead and do it.
The week before the wedding was insane; I don't know that I've ever been so busy in my life. I tied up a bunch of plasticware with ribbons, assembled a whole bunch of decorations, had dinner with relatives from both of our families, and had a nice day at the spa.
The spa, being the 'Golden Orchid' in Frederick - highly reccomended. Yes, it was pricey, but everyone there really went the extra mile to ensure that things were going to be perfect for me. I had my mani and pedi on Thursday, as well as my trial hair and makeup. Now, my trial hair was supposed to be a '15 minute consult', but my hairdresser, Kathy, decided she'd whip the whole thing up just to make sure it was going to be good for the wedding day. (It was fabulous.) I'll have pictures up in the next week or two of everything, including the time at the spa. The makeup artist was also really great - a lady that you would never peg to be doing makeup. She started out by telling me that she highly advocates a natural look for brides, which I was very happy about, as I almost never wear makeup. She used a lot of really neat techniques, such as taking lipcolor, putting a tiny bit on a popsickle stick, and using a paintbrush to apply. She also did eyeliner by taking a regular pencil and swiping the brush against the...lead? Whatever you wanna call it, and then applying. Gotta try that.
Friday was the rehearsal, and also the morning that we packed everything up and made base camp up in Frederick. Getting everything we needed for the wedding AND the honeymoon was quite a feat. We spent most of the day transforming the meeting hall at my church into a space worthy of a wedding reception, it was really amazing to see the before and after effect. (Again, pictures coming soon.) The rehearsal itself was really surreal. Jon was doing a good job of figuring out how to do the music, Danny was trying really hard to not be nervous by being a retard, and I was reassuring my mother that everything was in fact going to turn out alright. It was a very confusing sequence of ushering out the mothers, the boys processing in, the girls processing in, all to proper musical cues. My poor cousin Lexie, who is 7 now and was my flower girl, had to figure out how to walk slowly while going down the aisle - she ended up doing just fine, but I think she was mostly petrified of the 10 strange people who suddenly were instructing her on how to walk!
We then had some delicious giant sub for din, and resumed the decorating. Danny and I were there until 10:30 pm, with Will, who came by and set up some ridiculously awesome speakers. The subwoofers were big enough that the whole town of Walkersville could probably have heard them - it ended up that we didn't even use them, as their softest setting was just a bit much. Then, I went to sleep at my parent's house, and he at his. I didn't really sleep much that night, luckily Syd (my parent's dog) kept me good company. I got up about 6 AM or so, as I knew it was just pointless to try sleeping any longer, and went outside to watch the sunrise. Mom came outside and we chatted for a few minutes, it was very peaceful and refreshing. After showering and getting things ready in the morning, my cousins/bridesmaids met Krisy and I at Mom's house, and we headed over to Panera for breakfast. Krisy and I made a heroic effort to eat one whole bagel between us - a shame, because Panera has some of the most beautiful pastries. I think at that point Krisy was more nervous than I was, mostly that she would trip with her high heels going down the aisle. I wasn't really nervous at that point - it hit me, but only about an hour before the ceremony.
After breakfast, we headed over to the Spa, where Stacy and Jessie (cousins) had their nails done, and Krisy and I alternated getting our hair and makeup done. Mine was completely up in a curly bun kinda thing, and hers was half up, with curls hanging down her neck. We left the spa about noon, and headed back to Panera, where we had left Stacy's car. We dropped her and Jessie off at their car, thinking that they would follow us back to the church. But, after about a minute of yapping to each other, Krisy and I realized that they had already left! A frazzled phonecall to my Aunt Kelly later, we realised they probably knew how to get back, and luckily they were there when we arrived about 15 minutes later.
After hurrying inside and starting to get dressed, being under the impression that we were short on time, we found out around quarter to 1 that there was some kind of backup on 270 (one of the main northbound roads to Frederick). Pastor Steve, our officiant, asked whether I wanted to go ahead at 1, or wait for people to show - I opted to wait, so we started the ceremony at 1:30. (He said that Danny had expected me to want to go ahead - good thing there wasn't any money on that wager!)
Getting ready was fun - Danny and I bought his and her versions of CK 'Eternity - Summer' perfume/cologne to wear on the big day, so I got to use that for the first time. Getting my dress on was even more ridiculous than I thought it would be, as I had to step into it rather than put it on over my head, for fear of my hair being messed up. Then, of course, we ended up standing around for a half hour while we waited for it to be "go-time". Yes, standing, because sitting down might have created wrinkles - oye! My mother made a point of suggesting that I put my veil over my face so that I wouldn't forget - I assured her that wasn't neccesary, and made a point of reminding the 'maids to remind me to put it down.
Of course, I forgot. :P
But other than that, the ceremony was wonderful. Everyone looked great, especially Danny - I had never gotten to see him in a tux before, and it 'suited' him well. Hah! Get it?
I think I was able to listen to maybe 20% of what Pastor Steve was saying. I alternated between staring at his eyes, and then when that got akward, his tie, and then, later in the ceremony, the bead of sweat that was trickling down his forehead. Poor guy :P. Every time we would go to prey, Danny and I had to readjust our hands because they had gotten so sweaty. But I remember being impatient to get to the first kiss more than anything - maybe because our hands were sweaty, maybe because I was nervous, probably because I like the guy. When we proccessed out, Swanson put his hand up for a high-five, which I obliged. That was the moment when Danny and I breathed a kind of sigh of relief - that we could relax, and that it was time to have some fun!
And of course, by fun, I mean pictures. A friend of the family, Debbie, did our pictures, and she was really good about it, but there's nothing inherantly amusing about getting your picture taken when you're in uncomfortable clothing, hungry, and eager to say hi to your friends. My Mom managed to score some hors d'oevres for us, which were delicious. Josh did all of the cooking, and he did an absolutely stellar job. What a wonderful gift. I heard nothing but praise for every single dish.
Anyway, Ben announced us into the reception, which was fun - then we went and sat down and had to order people to keep talking, rather than staring silently. The first thing that caught my eye as I sat down was our be-autiful cake! There was a lady who did a lot of cakes at Morningside named Karen Rodkey, and we were lucky enough to have her do our cake. I was glad that it was directly in my line of sight the whole dinner. Danny's best man, Andrew the O, did the toast, which was hilarious and touching. He was really able to capture the complexity of our relationship in two simple words - Kidney Punch.
For din, we had stuffed shells in a sausage maranara sauce (Josh and Tim, the chef at Morningside who was so gracious to help us out, MADE the sausage themselves. Wow.), caesar salad, and garlic bread. Danny and I took about three collective bites, and then proceeded to meet 'n' greet the tables. One of the more amusing parts of the day way peeking into the kitchen and seeing Huebner and McMurry doing dishes - I was so lucky to have the help of so many friends and family that day - truly, truly a blessing. Most everyone had skills that were well put to use.
Then, we got to the dancing - I may not have made the smartest decision in using Jack Johnson's "Better Together" as our first dance, as I neglected to realize that it's a whopping 5 and a half minutes. But, despite that and the lights being on, it managed to be a special moment - especially because Danny kept trying to spice things up by shaking his groove-thang. His good friend Jen took some short videos throughout the whole shindig, and there's a pretty funny one of that particular incident. Then we had the Father-Daughter dance, for which the lights were off, which was good. I have to wonder if those two dances are always akward - everyone is just silent and staring!! Still, a fun time.
I neglected to show Ben how to use the itunes party playlist thingie, so the dancing got off to a bit of a bumpy start, but eventually we kicked into gear - I knew I could trust Diana, Ina, Jon and Swanson to do a little booty-shakin'!
When it came time for the bouquet toss and garter retrieval, no surprises, I ended up botching the throw - the cieling was low, and I apperantly did not do enough precise calculations to get the arc right. Luckily, Lexie ran out and grabbed the bouquet, so that turned out just fine. Ben made Danny get down on his hands and knees and crawl over to me to get the garter, which prompted lots of laughs. He was, at first, planning on diving in 'head first', but I vetoed that and made him exercise some modesty and just use his hands. His friend Scott was the proud recipient of the garter, after Danny threw it baseball style, rather than flinging it like a rubber band, for fear that it would hit him in the face :P.
Now, I had been planning on being polite and sweet while feeding the cake to my new Hubby. Apperantly, he had other ideas - and he paid dearly for that. Up the nose. >:)
Then, much to his surprise, I attacked the cake like a ninja! All of my long-unused serving skills went to good use as we disassembled and served the cake. I enjoyed doing that very much - it was a nice way to get to see everyone again, one on one.
After a few more songs and saying some goodbyes, Danny and I went to go change into our traveling gear. When we came back to the reception hall, it was already almost totally torn down - a bit depressing, but good for those people who needed to stay and clean up. We grabbed up our suitcases, hopped into Andrew and Ina's car, and headed off towards Dulles and our Honeymoon in Disney. And I'll wait for the next post to talk about that!
Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated with us, and especially everyone who helped in one way or another - it was a lovely time!
