Having stopped breathing at the 1983 Worldcon (and close to it on other occasions), I am grateful for breath. Fortunately, my asthma is now uncer control.
I don't know if I could scuba-dive either, it might be too scary. I tried on John's C-PAP mask once and that freaked me out, having air blowing into my nose. I don't even like air blowing in my face from a fan, or if I'm under a window. If it hits me in just the wrong way it sets off a panic reaction. However, I did try snorkeling in 2003, with a friend, just in a swimming pool. Although it took me a few minutes to work up the nerve to SLOWLY lower my face under the water (after practicing breathing with the snorkel on with my face out of the water), I found that I could deal with it. Maybe it's because I am in control of when I go under the water and also the fact that it's so close to the surface. Have you ever tried snorkeling?
Yeah -- we'd paid the big bucks to do the scuba (no experience necessary) -- and they gave me a consolation prize as it were of doing snorkeling instead. Loved it.
