‎"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." --Dr. Martin Luther King ( Read more... )

I completely agree. Also this Mark Twain one:

"I never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."

I admit to finding a grim satisfaction that he didn't die all snug and warm in his bed. Lesser gods, i'm hanging with ...

So relieved to hear someone else sees the madness for what it is. That "eye for an eye" crap makes my skin crawl.

Yep. "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." I know for a fact Gandhi said that, I saw the movie. ;)

Good quote regardless of who said it.

from Salon.com RE where the quote came from and how it spread: http://www.salon.com/entertainment/tv/feature/2011/05/03/fake_mlj_quote_osama_death/index.html

Truthfully, I recognized the latter half as something either MLK said or Bobby Kennedy, but i really didn't care if it was a real quote-quote. I liked what it said, and would have been proud if I could have claimed I said it first. MLK studied Gandhi as well as Jesus Christ, so he was always saying things similar to this off the cuff. But, being such an important public figure meant that whatever he said for public speaking/consumption was pretty much documented and in quotable quote collections.

The gist of the message, non-violence is the only sensible way to move forward in this world, is very MLK. Very MG. Very JC.

It sounds like something he would have said, for sure, were he here.

I posted the article on my page because I find it rather frightening how quickly information spreads on the internet...even misinformation.

I get your point about things going viral, but the only "misinformation" here is exactly who said what. The sentiment is what went viral, and I'm rather heartened to think something positive can spread as quickly as all the negative shit out there.
