andrea-
i'm teaching English in Japan as part of the JET program, sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. basically, i work at two different junior high schools and sometimes at elementary schools, helping with English grammar and pronunciation issues. it's been a great time so far, lots of small adventures. looking forward to a bit bigger adventure over the holidays, when some buddies and i will do a tour of the country. should be good fun. check out some photos i've taken so far here.

The Aichi Expo should be interesting. I've heard that there is some controversy over whether the ecology theme is merely a facade. Which doesn't seem like much of a stretch - or necessarily a bad thing.
I feel that in Japan, the surface of things is as valuable as the soul. For example, you may see countless young people wearing t-shirts with nonsensical English statements printed on them. While on the one hand this seems shallow ("I don't care about the meaning, it looks cool"), it is also much more complex ("I don't know what these specific words mean, but that doesn't matter. I do know that they are cultural signifiers").
That being said, a even thin veneer of ecological concern is better than none at all.

Anyhow, if you do make it to Nagoya, you should visit Lullatone. Shawn is really eager to show people around the city, and he knows it well.

Come to think of it, depending on when you go, I may meet you there...

By the way, Happy Birthday Kevin.
