I was actually thinking about this just today. I don't know this issue in particular, but I was thinking: if it were possible to make factory farmed animals so docile that they wouldn't mind so much being kept in those conditions, would it be compassionate to do so?

I think not compassionate. Would you want to be forced into being more docile so you could survive better in polluted torturous conditions awaiting your slaughter? Some humans choose this docility through certain drugs/alcohol but they are not forced...or at least not overtly. I have heard rumors that birth control contains hormones that are not necessary to stop pregnancy but are included to make women more docile. Do I believe it? I don't know.

Perhaps, if I had no chance of escaping, I might want that. Of course the more compassionate response would be to end those tortuous conditions, but if that were impossible, would it be better for the animal (or person) to be more okay with it, maybe experience less suffering? I'm not sure. The birth control hormones thing is outrageous~ hopefully that's not true.
