In a way this is what I've been worried about from the get-go with gmail accounts, and all their super-archiving/data-mining. But in another way, this is exactly what subpoenas are supposed to do. And it's very difficult to obtain a subpoena for things like this. I mean, your credit card record, library record, phone/cell phone bills, and whatever else can all be disclosed with the proper subpoena. Why is email exempt? Government officials often have to hand over their email records, and granted, they're more accountable since they're directly serving the country, but I'm just saying that this is not an enormous step.
