XII Sayaka will be taken from the beginning of episode seven, after Kyouko talks to her in the church, but before Hitomi reveals her feelings for Kyosuke. This timeline is before anything really horrible happens, but she's in a precarious position and could go either way.

"Looking back on it, I was clueless. I didn't know about miracles, or the price you have to pay for them."
Sayaka is introduced as the tomboyish, cute bruiser type. She's more outgoing and forward than her best friend, Madoka, has a good sense of humor and is very cheerful and active. She has an earnest desire to help and protect others. She often stands in front of Madoka as if to shield her from harm in the witch barriers (before she gains her powers), and her wish is centered around healing a boy she's in love with. This desire to help others, however, has long-term, devastating effects on her psyche: after all, in the series...there's no such thing as a selfless wish. At first, it seems as if Sayaka is the standard knight archetype: the brave and noble sort of character who wishes only to do good. However, while she appears brave and outgoing, as well as willing to jump headfirst into any confrontation, in reality, the focus of her wish and her eventual stark, black and white view of good and evil are actually indicators of a deep lack of self-esteem and self-identification. The shock and pain she deals with over witnessing Mami's violent and gruesome death sours her relations with the other Puella Magi permanently, as she sticks to the belief that Mami was using her powers in the way they were meant to be used, to help others. She believes Kyouko and Homura only use their abilities to help and benefit themselves, and this, in addition to her self-worth issues, shapes the principles she adopts as a Puella Magi, as well as eventually lead to her lonely and untimely demise.
Put simply, Sayaka doesn't know who she is or what she wants, as is proven when her wish to heal Kyosuke turns out to work against her -- she thought she wanted only for him to be well, but over time it becomes evident that she also wanted to be acknowledged and loved for her contributions to his well-being. Sayaka throws herself into the well-being of others. Her sense of self-worth then, is tied into what she can do for people. She visits Kyosuke almost every day in the hospital, thinking the company and her own prayers might be enough to bring much-needed cheer into his life. After he explodes at her and says she brings him music only to torture him, she still makes the deal with Kyuubey in order to heal Kyosuke's hand so that he might be able to play violin again, even knowing that she will live the remainder of her life endlessly combatting witches. When Madoka expresses sadness for Sayaka making the contract to become a magical girl, she insists it is what she wanted, and discourages Madoka from doing the same in order to protect her. The day she hears Kyosuke play his violin again, she says it is "the happiest day of her life." It's only natural then, that for someone whose feelings of worth are dependent on what others think of her, that she suffers greatly when the sacrifices she makes do not give her the results she desires.
Initially, she remains steadfast in her efforts to help others. Once she discovers the truth behind the conditions of her contract with Kyuubey -- that she is a corpse animated by the Soul Gem, her world is sent out of whack. She seems to hold on to her ideals after this in an attempt to cope with the fact that her body has been changed without her prior knowledge, and even after Kyouko's warning that giving her life for the sake of other people will end badly, she refuses to behave selfishly and remains determined to protect people and give them hope. Her resolve finally begins to crumble when she realizes, after her friend Hitomi reveals her own feelings for Kyousuke, that she will never be able to reveal her own feelings to him. By becoming a "zombie" as she puts it, she believes she has barred herself from the chance of ever having a normal life. After this event, there are signs of Sayaka beginning to lose her hold on sanity. Her fight with the witch Elsa Maria is erratic and reckless. She ignores her injuries, viciously slashing the witch to pieces and laughing maniacally as she insists that she isn't in pain. She breaks down to Madoka later, and speaks to her with uncharacteristic harshness. This adds to her feelings of guilt -- she feels guilty about her resentment of Hitomi as well, and she begins to slip further and further into grief and despair. She finally loses all hope after overhearing the misogynistic talk of two men as they discuss their girlfriends, having come to the conclusion that the world is not worth saving. It's hinted at that she relates to the women that the men are bashing, and understands how it feels to have one's efforts to help constantly rebuked or ignored. Her transformation into a witch is the culmination of her despair and grief, and throughout her witches' barrier are calls for attention, signs of her desperate need to be noticed.
At the end of the series, after her death, she speaks to Madoka while watching Kyosuke play the violin. She says that she finally remembered that she did not simply wish to hear him play, but she wanted everyone to hear him play. This simple statement represents the nature of her personality. Sayaka is not a knight, but a martyr, someone who suffers for her love, and dies for her principles. By saying this, she has given up the chance that Madoka has offered her to restart her life as a normal person, and instead decides to fade away rather than reverse the conditions of her wish. In the end, it is proven that she was braver than she knew herself, and she passes on peacefully, her life given the purpose it was missing, and with the knowledge that she has achieved her goal of helping the world by giving it hope.

"I didn't want this power just to fight witches. I wanted it to protect the ones I love."
Forming a contract with Kyuubey gives girls the powers of a Puella Magi. Once making the contract, a girl receives a "Soul Gem," an item which allows them to transform and use magic. The Soul Gem will dull and become tarnished with repeated use, and so must be cleansed with a "Grief Seed," the remains of a witch. Sayaka wears a ring with her name engraved on it, the symbol of her contract, and there is a C-shaped note on the fingernail of her ring finger. Depending on the nature of the wish and the personality of the girl, the powers, outfit and weaponry vary. As Sayaka is by far the least jaded and most idealistic of the Puella Magi, she is styled after the ideal knight in shining armor (cape and all), and is the only one to have a melee weapon--swords. As her wish was to heal another, she can heal wounds on her body by usage of "healing circles," runes that appear to be a series of musical notes arranged in a circular fashion. In addition, she is far more resistant to physical damage, standing up almost immediately after Kyouko hits her with an attack that she claims should've put Sayaka out of action for months. When attacking, she moves so quickly she creates blasts of blue light that damage witches. She can use her cape to protect herself, as well as summon what appears to be an infinite amount of swords. She can create runes in the air and on the ground to give herself momentum for sudden bursts of speed, and appears to be incredibly agile.
Of course, there is a catch to all this awesome shiny magical girl stuff. The aforementioned Soul Gem has its name for a reason. Upon making the contract, Kyuubey literally rips a girls' soul from her body and places it in the Soul Gem. This makes their bodies little more than shells animated by their close proximity to said Gem, and if the Soul Gem breaks or is further than 100 meters from their body, they will die. There's another catch to this too. The Soul Gem is a manifestation of not only the girls' soul, but her hopes and dreams. As she uses magic, the gem becomes tarnished by despair and grief, which must be sucked away by a Grief Seed. However, the energy of the hope produced by the wish must be balanced by an equal amount of despair. This means that the girl will experience despair equal to that of the hope of her wish, which will tarnish her Soul Gem.
Eventually, inevitably, this will cause her Soul Gem to become tarnished beyond repair and transform it into a Grief Seed--and transform her into a Witch. This means that all the Witches were originally magical girls. Sayaka, however, is unaware of this at her point in canon.

Mostly for my personal reference, because I like to have references.
♮ forceful and direct.
♮ easily excited and cheery at first, somewhat dramatic. Talks somewhat quickly.
♮ more informal than Mami and Homura, less "cutesy" than Madoka. "See ya!" instead of "Goodbye or bye bye," says things like "I'll smack her a good one."
♮ Smashes words together at times: "Why'd" instead of "why do" and "whaddya" instead of "what do you." "Gonna" instead of "going to."
♮ As she loses her cheer and good nature, her speech is less informal and casual.
terms of address:
Kaname Madoka: Madoka-chan, Madoka, closeness, familiarity and friendship.
Shizuki Hitomi: Hitomi-chan, Hitomi, see above.
Akemi Homura: Rarely refers to her as anything other than "transfer student." Disrespect and distance.
Tomoe Mami: Mami-san, slight formality, indicates politeness and respect as Mami is an upperclasswoman and someone she admires.
Kamijou Kyosuke: Kyosuke, closeness and familiarity.
Sakura Kyouko: Oddly enough, she never refers to her by name. Given her informal way of addressing others, it's unlikely she would use her last name combined with the -san honorific, but it's possible. So either Kyouko-san or Sakura-san would be appropriate. Otherwise, some mildly disparaging nickname, the same as she uses for Homura.
Kyuubey: Just "Kyuubey."

♮ "Don't worry, Madoka. If she tries anything, I'll smack her a good one!"
♮ "Yeah. Ignorance is bliss. It's not like wishes you'd give your life for are that unusual. I guess lots of people out there have them. So if we can't think of any because of how lucky we are...our ignorance is truly a blessing. Why us? It isn't fair! There are people who would love a chance like this!"
♮ On witch hunting: "This is less fantastic than I expected."
♮ "I knew you were an ally of justice! On the other hand, that transfer student is a real pain in the butt!"
♮ "Why did it have to be Kyosuke? My fingers all work perfectly, but they can't do anything. Why couldn't it have been me instead?"
♮ "Mami was so nice. She did that to teach us the resolve you need to fight."
♮ "Nobody knows. We know about Mami and the witches, but the other people don't. It feels like we're living in a different world with totally different people. The world changed a long time ago. We should've discovered this earlier."
♮ "Both exist. Both miracles and magic exist!"
♮ "So! I dunno. Maybe it's confidence. Maybe it's relief. And there's probably a bit of pride mixed in too. Oh well, this is my chance to shine! I, Magical Girl Sayaka, will protect the peace of Mitakihara City!"
♮ "I found my wish. I have something I don't care if I have to risk my life in battle for."

♮ "I think I misunderstood you. I apologize for that. Sorry. But I don't regret making a wish to help someone. If I regret that, those feelings will become fake. I don't think I paid too much. I can use this power to do good."
♮ "I'll fight the way I want to. If I get in your way, you can try to kill me again. I'm not going to lose. No hard feelings."
♮ "Why...why are you so nice? I don't deserve this...No. I just...started having regrets today. I thought if I hadn't saved Hitomi. Just for a second. I'm a failure as a hero. I can't face Mami now."
♮ "Go away. I can handle this alone."
♮ "He was right! If I do it this way, it doesn't hurt at all!"
♮ "It's so easy once you figure it out. I feel invincible!"
♮ "If I don't do that, I can't win. I don't have the skill."
♮ "What is 'good for me?' What could even be good for me now that I look like this? I'm just a rock now that's only good for killing Witches. A dead body moving around like it's alive. What's anyone going to do that's good for me now? It's obvious it's pointless now."
♮ "If you want to do something for me, try being in my position. Of course you can't. I don't expect you to cast off your humanity out of pity."
♮ "You can do anything, but you refuse to do anything. Don't talk to me like you understand when you don't."
♮ "I'm such an idiot! Why did I say that? You can't save me!"
♮ "I'll be a different Puella Magi than all of you. I've decided. I will not cooperate with anyone who abandons or uses others. I don't need payment. I won't use magic just for myself."
♮ "I'll only die when I can't kill Witches. That'll mean I'm useless anyway. So I don't care. If I can't kill Witches, I have no reason to exist."
♮ "Why indeed? It's because I know...that you're a liar. Your eyes say you've given up. Everything you say is empty. You've just said you're doing this for me, but I know you're thinking something else. You can't fool me."
♮ "Tell me about whoever you're talking about. The woman you were just talking about. Tell me more about her. You must mean a lot to that woman. She wants to make you happy. You know that, don't you? But you're comparing her to a dog. You don't thank her. If she stops being useful, you'll abandon her. Is this world worth protecting? Tell me why I should fight. Tell me right now, or I'll..."
♮ "I don't care anymore. What was important to me, what I wanted to protect...I don't know what those are anymore."
♮ "Hope and despair always balance out to zero. That's what you said, right? I understand what that means now. I did save a few people, but with each one, the hate in me grew. I even hurt my best friend."
♯ "Whenever I wish for someone to be happy, someone else has to suffer as much. That's what it means to be a Puella Magi. I'm such an idiot."
