Do you know if it opts out the communities I moderate too, or am I out of luck in that regard? Or does it matter?

apparently it wasn't even a news post. it was only in lj biz.
i've no idea about the communities. does the community itself have an admin console?

No, but I figured it out. ^^ Just type "set for [comm name] opt_exclude_stats 1" in the admin console instead.

It should be an "opt in" policy instead of "opt out" so that everyone who's in the program knows about it.
