I am not too keen on sea-life either, but I did buy a preserved little octopus once. I exposed it to air, used it for a photo and threw it out. As far as beetles go, you should use real ones, they tend to look fake/plastic when you photograph them, so mixed media might make it worse. I have a bat mounted in a double-glass shadowbox. Its wings are glued to the other side of the glass, so if you buy a tarantula, it might make more sense to buy a frame with a background.
