Once while they were out on the front porch Kaylee told him how she wanted nothing of romance. Because romance was cliché and awkward and nothing at all like Fairy Tales. He sat on the step above her and started tracing words onto her back. If Kaylee concentrated hard enough she could make out what he was writing. She decided to bite. “What in the world are you doing?” She asked slightly annoyed. “I’m writing down our fairy tale. Wanna hear it?” She wrinkled her nose a bit. Something she did when she wasn’t so sure of what to say. “…well, maybe. Fine. Let’s hear it.” She could almost feel Joe’s over exuberant smile from behind her. She almost smiled too but caught herself. “Once upon a time, there was a beautiful maid who was forced to work in a café with a tyrant as a boss,” “Hey now, Jenny isn’t that bad.” “She worked days and nights and never had time for any real fun. The tyrant would always tell her what a mess she looked so she never realized how truly beautiful she was,” “I like this part.” “One day a gallant and oh, so handsome prince,” “Your ego knows no bounds” “was passing through the village and hearing all the wonderful stories about the café’s famous cappuccinos, he decided to stop by.” “we do have some pretty good cappuccinos.” “Do you wanna hear the story or not?” “Fine fine I’m sorry. Carry on.” “Thank you. Now, where was I? Oh, yeah! So he stopped by the café and the beautiful maid comes to take his order but he takes one look into her eyes and falls deeply…” He pauses for a while and stops tracing words onto her back. The world seems to stop for a moment. “He falls deeply….in love.” Kaylee blushes and she thanks whatever god is out there that Joe can’t see her. “And he immediately asks for her hand in marriage but, having always heard she was ugly the maid quickly runs away crying, thinking it was all a joke because such a handsome prince could never love her!” “Ffffff, as if!” He gives her a playful shove and laughs. “I’m making this up as I go okay?” He rests his head on top of hers and continues his story. “But the Prince wouldn’t give up! Because she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and he had to have her all to herself. So he went back to the café every single day in hopes of seeing her but her boss had seen him propose to her and had shut her away in a dungeon!” “A dungeon in a café? Really? This is just getting ridiculous.” “Well why don’t you finish the story, then?!” She looked up at him with her big brown eyes and raised an eyebrow. “Fine, I will. So…the prince decided to go rescue the princess and set off, but quickly realized he had no idea where this dungeon was.” “Hey! The Prince ain’t stupid!” “No but the prince is impulsive and doesn’t think ahead.” Joe sulked. And Kaylee laughed. “So he decided to just wing it because the prince didn’t want to ask directions. But when he finally got to the dungeon she wasn’t there. He sat down in the empty cell and cried and-” “Hey wait a minute! Princes don’t cry!!” Joe stood up and waved his arms rapidly! “No way no way change it!” Kaylee shook her head. “No you told me to finish the story so I will.” Before he could open his mouth again she continued. “So there he sat his head in his arms knowing he had lost the most beautiful girl in the world but then he felt a hand on his shoulder. He quickly turned around and there stood the beautiful maid standing tall! She had escaped on her own and finally realized that all her boss had told her were lies! Knowing that the prince would come looking for her she had returned and waited for him. Seeing him cry she saw that he truly loved her and she l-….loved him too. So they ran off into the sunset together.” “Into the sunset? How cliché.” “That’s what fairytales are, Joe. Cliché’s and happy endings tied up with a sparkly ribbon.” “Not our fairy tale, Kaylee. Not ours. We did run off into the sunset but we ran away from our present. The prince was tired of his royal duties and the Maid was tired of her plain life so they ran off together and lived a life of adventure. Because that’s the way they rolled.” Kaylee laughed a bit. “What makes us so different, Joe? What makes our story so special?” He looked straight into her eyes and Kaylee almost forgot to breathe. She had no idea Joe could look that serious. “Because what we have is Special, Kaylee. I’ve been almost everywhere on this road trip and I’ve never found what we have. That’s why our story is special. Tell me where else you’ve seen two people who don’t even know each other’s last names and are absolutely sure that they love each other. “ She looked at him and slowly smiled the brightest smile that she had ever smiled. “Joe….you’re such a charmer.”
