“It’s just that he’s one of the best we’ve got.”

“I know, Dad.”

“I’m sorry, Al. The Ministry’s going through a tough stretch, and quite frankly, the Weather Department is severely understaffed. I’ve been meaning to look into it, but-”

“Dad, it’s fine. I understand.”

“Okay. Well. Your mother sends her love. And if you want to talk-”

“Goodnight, Dad.”

“…Goodnight, Al.”

Their first night together, it storms. The firmament is bruised black and violet and grey, cold water lashing down. Lightning dances like quicksilver in the sky.  Thunder bellows, and the walls rattle.

Outside, a storm rips the world apart.

Inside, they create a new one.

Al watches his father’s face disappear from the fire. Then he stands, stretches, and sits again, listlessly watching the flames twist in the hearth.

He could kick himself for being so pathetic, but he doesn’t have the energy. He takes a deep breath and sighs, imagining it’s a gale, a wind strong enough to bring Scorpius home.

He peers out the window, half hoping.

It’s a bright summer day, and the sky is depressingly clear.

“I don’t know about this…”

“No one’s going to come out here, Al. Relax.”

“But-”

His words are lost in wind and rain. It’s late evening, and a storm is raging against the castle walls. They are on a small balcony overlooking the Forbidden Forest.

Lightning flashes over the trees, and Scorpius grins.

“Here goes,” he mouths.

Al watches him take his wand in hand, watches him stare out at the sky, and watches him bend the lightning. Serpentine energy twists into a jagged A, and then an S.

He takes his hand, and they share a kiss that breeds whirlwinds in his chest.

A crash outside brings his nap to an abrupt end. Al rolls off the couch, curses, and staggers to his feet. A look out the window explains the noise- the clear summer day has deferred to a riotous downpour.

He pads over to the window, pressing fingers against cool glass. Dazzling light erupts overhead, yellow bolts twisting into a series of letters:

L.

O.

V.

E.

Y.

O.

U.

“You too,” he whispers.
