this is just for my own benefit really. he doesn't knock but he stands aside and waits for her to acknowledge him before he enters the room, calls her "my lady" and apologizes, shifts on his feet, fidgets, looks at the ground.
"lady melisandre's told me everything," she says before he says anything
"you musn't despair," she says before he says anything
because she already knows. she is queen. she already knows. anyway, he sighs and fidgets and doesn't look her in the eye.
"i've sinned." "no."
no -- no. no, one shake of the head. SHE IS SO DIRECT. SHE IS HIS COUNTERPART IN EVERY WAY -- and she knows, and he is visibly shocked because he does not understand the secret language of women, "lady melisandre told me everything" -- the bonds of women
and she says i have gave you nothing
and he says that's not true and yes stannis loves his daughter that is fucking apparent
but he loves her like a king. he is barely there at all. selyse takes care of her. selyse sees that she is warm and fed and happy. selyse gives her books to read and keeps her company. and stannis is a novelty so she jumps up and greets him as such but it's selyse who is doing the parenting here
(also she is queen
she looks out for the realm as well because it is hers as well and she knows stannis still has work to do)
and when he says "best forget him" it's not just his heart breaking for his daughter, who is losing her only friend, it's also breaking for himself, because he's lost his only friend
SO LEAVE ME ALONE
