SO WELL. This chapter!
We start with a flashback! There are two coffins and a little girl weeping, begging "Kevin" not to leave her. Her father and mother are gone, don't leave her alone, Kevin. :'( LET'S JUST SAY HE LOOKS VERY FAMILIAR AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO HE IS AT THIS POINT I WILL TEMPORARILY DISOWN YOU.
Cut Break getting into a swordfight with the head of the Fourth Great House (the one that was a mystery for so long! Kana is "baruma" which I am going to, for the sake of this post, interpret as "Balmer"), who wears ladyshoes, is very pretty, and talks like an old man. Swish! Snap! Coughing up blood on Break's end! Remus gets in the way and gets a smart whack across the head for his troubles, and then Duke Balmer slashes with his sword, cutting open Break's coat and shirt.
ON HIS CHEST IS A CLOCK SEAL WHOSE HANDS HAVE FULLY TURNED.
Which means that, by the rules as they have been established to Oz, Break should be dead in the Abyss by now.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Duke Balmer goes on to tell the story, from fifty years ago, of a man named Kevin Ragnard -- a name Gil recognizes -- an illegal contractor who killed something like 116 people, sacrificing everyone he met to his chain. He was known as the "Red-Eyed Ghost." Apparently Duke Balmer's grandfather was part of the group who captured him, and. There's a lot of talk about the nature of illegal contractors and their relationship with the Abyss, about whether or not Kevin would be able to claw his way back out again, and what would happen if he did.
CUT TO KEVIN WAKING UP IN A WHITE ROOM, one full of talkative dolls and the Cheshire Cat, who identifies him as human and wears a blindfold across its eyes.
And then, from behind a curtain, comes Alice. She's dressed all in white, her hair is white, her skin is white, she holds a white rabbit plushie in her arms. A Knight-chain appears and bows to her, calling her the Abyss' Will, and says how he brought Kevin to her as she wished. (I presume this is Kevin's chain, since the Mad Hatter that Break uses is unique.) Alice tells Kevin that his household has been wiped out -- in his absence, people came in and killed everyone. (Including, presumably, the little girl from the beginning.) Kevin freaks out and attacks Alice, who laughs and talks about how everyone and anyone who contracts with chains in the Abyss want to save something -- other people, themselves, something. She cuts her hands on his sword and then licks her fingers, it is sexy. The knight-chain attacks, Alice gets pissed at it interrupting her "conversation" with Kevin, and destroys it in a RAIN OF BLOOD. The dolls laugh about Alice being angry, Alice thinks blood is pretty and makes Cheshire dance with her, and poor Kevin is very, very confused and upset.
A moment later, the dolls begin laughing at him. And they tell him that he'll become a chain, just like them. WHICH FREAKS HIM OUT, because a human, become a chain?! No way! But Alice tells him that the power of Abyss could make it possible, and mentions Glenn (Baskerville), talking about how she haaaaaates him, for stealing that person from her. Vincent and Gilbert, any~one who gets close to that person, she hates them all. :(
THEN SHE RIPS KEVIN'S EYE OUT. :)
She decides she'll give it to Cheshire, because that's why she called him (it's unclear whether she means Cheshire or Kevin) there in the first place, and proves that she and clone!Syaoran could be GOOD FRIENDS; they have similar tastes! Kevin meanwhile is in LOTS OF PAIN! and UNHAPPY! and remembering the little girl who begged for him not to leave her at the beginning of the chapter!
Abruptly, though, she starts screaming and thrashing; something has opened up and there's suddenly a whole ton of things falling into the Abyss at once. As she realizes this, a voice tells her that it was Sabrie; he listened carefully and opened the door to the Abyss all~ by~ himself~ but in the process, everyone else fell into the Abyss. :'(
"Well," says Vincent, with a bloody unconscious body on his shoulder, "hello there, Alice."
