ouran_contest's "Luck" challenge.
Note: "kaiun" means "better fortune" and "sho-fuku" means "recruit fortune". Those kanji are commonly used on omamori.
With all the confidence she can muster, Haruhi takes a deep breath and steps forward toward the large, ornate building where the Ouran University college entrance exams are being held in less than ten minutes. Trying not to feel shaky, she adjusts her bag over her shoulder. She may have the scholarship, but it will count for nothing if she cannot pass the exam. She has almost reached the steps when a voice stops her.
“Haruhi!” the loud calling of her name is familiar, and she turns to see Tamaki Suoh rushing toward her. It has been some weeks since she last saw him, and it is a surprise to catch sight of him running toward her, his blonde hair flying in the wind. “Wait!”
“Tamaki-senpai?” she asks, stopping to wait as he bounds up to her. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to wish you good luck!” he gasps, gripping her shoulders steadily. “I know you may be nervous but if I know anything about you, it’s that you’re going to do well!”
“Thanks, Tamaki-senpai,” Haruhi can feel herself calming down quite considerably at his familiar, overwhelming presence. “But aren’t you supposed to be in class?”
“I cut classes today,” he admits sheepishly. “I’m going to sit on the benches over there and wait until you finish, and then I’m taking you for lunch. I’m proud that you’ve come this far!”
Haruhi knows she should tell him his actions are unwise, but all she can do is shake her head and smile at his capriciousness and his unfailing ability to make her feel loved. She has known somewhere deep down that he’s had a crush on her since her first year of high school, and at times like this she doesn’t mind at all. “That might be nice. Thanks.”
“Oh, and here!” Tamaki seems to have remembered something monumental, and he digs into his pocket and pulls out an object which is places in her hand and closes her fingers around it. Haruhi has to smile at the sight of the small key chain shaped in the form of Daruma, holding two flags which proclaim “Kaiun!” and “Sho-fuku!”
“Uh… thanks, Tamaki-senpai,” Haruhi says, and Tamaki leans closer.
“For luck,” he whispers in her ear, his lips pressing her cheek for a light kiss that brings color to her cheeks.
“Th--thanks,” her composure is gone and she watches him standing and looking rather dramatic with the newly budding cherry blossoms fitting into his background and the breeze blowing through his hair. For a moment she wonders if he planned the image. Then a tinny voice on the loudspeaker proclaims. ’All students participating in the entrance exam please file into the central building…’
“I guess that’s your cue,” Tamaki says with a grin, and shyly he kisses Haruhi’s forehead. “Good luck. I know you’ll do well.”
“Thanks for being here, senpai,” Haruhi says with a rather embarrassed smile. She heads inside and leaves him to walk over to the benches. There is some small comfort in the fact that he will be waiting for her when she comes back to him.
Something tells her he always will.
